New Around Here
Via the web interface, while I can select a new firmware version to upload, and the UI tells me it is upgrading the firmware, once it completes I remain at version 3.0.0.4.374_205.

Just tried this two times with FW_RT_AC68U_3004374501.trx. Am I missing some obvious step? I'm pretty certain I'm following the same methodology I used to upgrade to 205 in the first place.

Reboot your router with no USB disk plugged in - the USB-related services (such as Download Master or the Media Server) can use too much RAM, not leaving enough for a firmware upgrade. Try again the FW update after that.

Merlin, thanks for the suggestion.

While that in and of itself did not work, it did put me on track for what finally did.

Unplug all USB-->Fresh boot of RT-AC68U-->attempt FW upgrade to 501-->upgrade still did not succeed (stuck at 205)

Unplug all USB-->Disable all wireless-->Fresh boot of RT-AC68U-->attempt FW upgrade to 501-->upgrade succeeded!

<sigh> I had such high hopes that 501 would finally elevate the status of this gear above "paperweight" status for my purposes. At least with 205, I had some wireless connectivity past a 24-hour period, albeit degraded. With 501, I lose all wireless connectivity past a 24-hour period, with only a full yank-power reset resolving the issue.

I've purchased quite a lot of Asus gear over the years (motherboards, netbooks, tablets) and had nothing but the best of experiences with each item. That was what made me decide to give the RT-AC68U a shot.

However, my experience with the poor reliability with this device...Asus's brand reputation is being seriously sullied by this. Most unfortunate.

501 is still beta, and just like you others are having issues as well. So in the mean time try 371 firmware.

Thanks, I'll give that a shot.

This does somewhat underscore my point regarding brand reputation, though: when I downloaded 501, nothing signified it was a beta FW release. The page now has that key information highlighted in red.

Mine has been running since December 19 with no problem on RMerlin's latest.
