New Around Here
Noob here, but experienced enough with forums to know SOMEONE will know where best to stow this post (constructively, that is . . .).

I couldn't find a post describing this problem anywhere, which probably says more about me than I'd prefer to hear, but I digress.

Just bought the RT-AC68U. First ASUS router. Seems to have crazy range, which is what I was after. The setup, however, was not Thirty Minutes to Joy. I kept getting a dialog box asking for authentication and it would not accept my information unless it was default. Only way to get out was to do a hard reset.

Happened OOB.

Happened after firmware upgrade.

Happened with Merlin.

Asus online chat was not helpful, so I called today. The tech advised me the logon passphrase could not be more than 16 characters. Mine was 21 characters. First rep also recommended I keep User Name to 8 characters.

She also had me make different SSIDs for 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, but I could use the same Security Key. Everything has been fine since.

I saw none of this in the documentation. Perhaps someone can explain in layman's terms why these things are the way they are. If there is a thread or sticky explaining this, I apologize in advance for missing it.

I did upgrade to Merlin after solving this problem (I restored factory settings for my support call) and it does seem nicer than stock thus far.

This forum has been a very helpful source of information.
