I could not remember the last hard reset of my RT-AC68U, gave it a shot today: revert to factory defaults and manual configured the router.
The Client List behavior has not changed and stays unstable.
I just got an answer from ASUS:
Hello Robert Vandiver,
Thank you for your response.

It is recommended that after a firmware upgrade that you reset the router. If you have not already done so I advise that you do the following:

1. Open a web browser, type 192.168.1.1 or router.asus.com in the address bar, and then press Enter.
2. Enter the administrator username and password and then click OK.
3. In the Advanced Settings menu on the left side, click Administration.
4. At the top of the page, click the Restore/Save/Upload Setting tab.
5. Click the Restore button.

If the above steps do not work I advise that you downgrade the firmware.

So I guess that they have no solution to the bad firmware. I replied to them stating that they should send me one that works! The older firmware has bugs too, that is why I upgraded to the new firmware. / 86U as the router and 2 68U's as nodes

It is anyway an odd advise, with the last step "Click the Restore button" you will not Reset the router, but it will ask you for a configuration backup file.
Good old help-desk reply, the wrong answer picked from the list of standard answers.

In recent versions of ASUS firmware, those are the correct instructions to reset to defaults. You are thinking of the "Restore Setting/Upload" button.

:) A picture may make it easier to visualize ... remember to check the box before you click Restore button. The previous version of firmware has a separate Initialize Button.

Already did the restore, and restore to factory default via the restore button on the back of the router. The same results. It stops letting me input anything. Got 31 devices into it this time before. it stopped letting me. The same thing, Connected devices list (Network Map) changing constantly. Asus had me send Log files etc to elevate it to Level 2.

Received this just now:

UPDATE: 1;15 AM Checked 86U No reservation list/ GONE!, the Internet says disconnected. Client List is gone. Hit refresh shows 2 Network map. Just keeps getting better. And why don't the restore settings Restore DHCP reservation List anymore?

So glad I sold my two AC3200, one N66U and one AC68U and went Google WiFi when reading these firmware threads.

RT-AC68U:
The client status overview does not show all connected WiFi clients. In the Asus APP, however, all clients are displayed.

I'm seeing the same thing on my AC-66U B1.

The web interface does not properly display and count attached devices, my Android App only shows WiFi attached devices. Seems odd that Ethernet clients don't show at all using the web or the app.

Can you see Ethernet attached devices?

Trimline, RT-AC68U sometimes they show up and sometimes they don't. If you click on the "View List" icon and wait a few minutes the devices will show back up and disappear again. Hilarious!!! Asus should be ashamed of themselves. Tried to RESTORE to no avail.... STUCK with this crap....

Is that the only issue you've had with the RT-AC66U_B1 on this firmware? I haven't had time to upgrade yet so I'm still on the previous 3.0.0.4.384.32799 and the client list always an issue where it drops and repopulates. I have an issue with some clients where the internet drops for 10 secs then reconnects I'm hoping this update addresses it.

I haven't experienced the internet drops - I run my own PBX and it is really sensitive to drops. I have nothing in the PBX logs that would suggest that happening, although I did see this on my old Netgear router quite often, the 66u runs pretty clean.

Most people who participate in these threads are having issues. I think there are tons of people who upgraded without any problems. I upgraded both of my AC86Us (one operating in router mode and the other operating in AP mode) to the new firmware within hours of it being released, and everything is working fine. The client list viewer is still buggy, but no more so than its ever been.

RT-AC68U
firmware:3.0.0.4.384_45149

After the installation of the new software restored the factory settings. No icon to access the downloadmaster, not always can be applied to change the name of the client.

It's WebUI issue. It will be resolved in next release. Try a way to use URL as "router.asus.com:8081" to access your DM GUI.

They shouldn't have left the 380 codebase, i tried the new 384 fw (different build's) several times onto the last one but all of them created the same problems on my router.
Most of the time the issues are the same, starting fresh with already 50% ram being in use, and that builds up by the minute. I have nothing running or connected on the router just some port fw's.
After a few hours the RAM is hitting 80% and over and the UI becomes already slower loading.
Few hours later RAM usage is above 90% and both CPU cores are hitting 100% to 90% up and down. Then you can wait when all connections on the router die. And so happened with the latest FW also.

I'm back to Merlin's last 380.70 build: all smooth and working.

Did you erase NVRAM after installing the 384 build? I have a 68U handling 30-40 clients that was last booted a week ago and it is using only 58% RAM and CPU rarely over 10%. I'm also using it as a file server for my nightly backups.

OK got it, didn't do that earlier.

What is the procedure?
I am on 380.70 FW now
which order should i follow?

There's several ways to erase NVRAM. It is basically a factory reset - you'll lose all your settings. So best to backup your current settings and capture text using the shell command "nvram show > /jffs/settings.txt" (save it in jffs so it will survive a reboot). To be safe, best to copy it off the router.

I'd do that before the update. Then install the latest ASUS firmware through the gui or manually. After the reboot, erase the settings (nvram). You can do it on power-up by holding WPS for about 20 seconds - until the power light starts flashing. Or through the command line "nvram erase". Or through the GUI Admin/Factory Default/Restore (or Initialize - not sure it matters).

Initialize erases some settings not normally erased in restore, if I recall correctly. Use this if you want a true clean start.
Make sure to backup anything in JFFS if you use this.
Personally I like making sure mine is a blank slate, I reset via initialize, give it 3 minuets or so startup and then do a WPS reset also. It may be overkill or wonky, but it's my flow and it works for me.
