It has been my experience that most routers support USB flash drives in that they source enough current. That being said, has anyone successfully connected a Western Digital USB drive to an RT-AC68U? Please post any details such as the drive model and the router model if it is not an RT-AC68U.

Thanks!

Hi,

I run since one year a WD Elements 1048 (1 TB 2.5 inch drive with USB 3.0 enclosure) on my main router. On top I have a SanDisk Cruzer Fit thumb drive with 4 GB on the USB 2.0 port for Entware and other stuff.

Yes, it's a hassle to find a supported USB enclosure, but I had never problems with WD ones - even with the old 3.5" (with separate power supply) on my MIPS router!
And thumb drives always run like a charm too.

With kind regards
Joe

@joegreat: Thanks for sharing: can I assume the the WD Elements 1048 drive does not have an external power supply and is powered by the USB port? I should have stated in the OP that I am interested in a WD drive (non flash) that does not use an external power source.

Yep, typically 2.5 inch external drives are USB powered and do not have/need an external power supply. ;)
