Rt-ac86u high ram..

I will post a new topic for not posting on other.

I buy a brand new router and flash the latest version of Merlin..

I suppose is not normal to have always 400mb used on 512 meg ram..

I do 3-4 factory reset..and still same.. I deplug my usb storage.. I have 265/512..

It's suppose to be a very performante router on open vpn.. But my speed is ..

ISP: 60/10
Netgear R7000....20/10
Rt-ac86u.. 23/10

...

Is not a big difference..

Yes it is normal to see high ram. Much would be cache.

Install Entware / htop (via Diversion script) and run htop via SSH and you will see what I mean.

It is normal.

Are you seeing any negative effects?

I install all.. htop on diversion.. and I insttaled my transmission torrent.. and.. 29 free mb..

As I said, it's normal. However htop will show what is using RAM and how much is cache. Ensure you set up a Swap file too.

You can use htop to sort by RAM usage and display what is using the most RAM.

Do not use the Download Manager with Entware as it is incompatible I believe.

What does htop say is using the most memory?

The Asus Download Master is incompatible with Entware. Asus uses Optware which also uses /opt/ to hang in the application, just as Entware does. The two don't work together, obviously.
Transmission installed through Entware is fine.

Same place where you installed it: In your routers WebUI under USB Application.

I have a AC86U (check my forum sig for full details) and usually have around 275MB-325MB unused RAM after a full factory reset, once i install scripts, setup openvpn etc i'm left with around 70MB, since installing alpha i notice my unused ram goes rite down to 28MB, however i've never noticed any degrade in performance, although i've done two dirty upgrades so need to do full factory reset when i get time.

Linux manages RAM differently to Windows, unused RAM is wasted RAM. Don't worry about it unless you have performance problems. I do know AiProtection uses quite a bit of RAM, i keep it enabled but notice when disabled i get about i think if i remember correctly around an extrea 100MB or more free unused RAM.

I was the same at first constantly looking at how much unused RAM i had left but just ignore it unless you have issues and enjoy your AC86U, beast of a router

The simplest way to save that darned RAM from being used it to shut everything down and live the way we used to when phones wer phones and a computer was a person that computed numbers on paper or with an abacus.

The RAM counter on the network map (darn you, Asus), does give a misleading value as it doesn't break it down into what RAM is used by applications, cache/buffers etc. I personally use NetData. EDIT: Tools section is also good!

Indeed it is! Yes that shows buffer too, of which I only have 8MB buffer / 42MB cache / 36MB free. Seems fine though.

htop is great to show what's using what though.. Best resource monitor ever.

Netdata is impressive but resource hungry, especially on older MIPS routers.

for the records, I played for 3 weeks with the great RT-GT5300 that comes with 1Gb RAM and it stays most of the time with less than 50% of capacity in use...

a waste of resources in my view
