New Around Here
I originally had this as a reply to another thread, but I figured since it was an older (and possibly unrelated) thread I would just create a new one....Sorry mods, hopefully not offending anyone. Go ahead and delete/move this if needed.

I haven't read through all the threads concerning the AC87U yet, but I have had mine for a couple weeks now and am definitely experiencing some weird issues. I have upgraded to latest Merlin firmware 3.0.0.4.378.50_beta1 and done a couple of factory resets, but still have some random issues. Not sure what to do to fix these other than waiting on more firmware updates.

Example1:

My port forwards will randomly work. Sometimes my RDP port forward will have to be removed and re-added to allow connections again.

Example2:

My 5ghz band will randomly drop and come back. One time it actually died completely where the led for it turned off as well as showing off in the console.

Any tips/recommendations? Thanks!

I might try to sell this router for cheap and take a loss on it, and get an older model. Maybe someone else will have better luck.

*UPDATE*
I just spoke to Amazon and they will actually still let me return this router (even after I told them I threw away original packaging). So I most likely will return it and get an AC68U to replace it (or at least to try it). I will wait for replies to this thread to see if maybe I can get some help though, because I do like the router and would rather not return it. If it really is just a matter of waiting for a mature firmware to work out the kinks/bugs then I might cancel the return and keep it, or sell it further down the road.

Hopefully this is a fix for port forwarding!

UPDATE:

I disabled NAT acceleration from LAN / Switch Control settings to hopefully fix my port forwarding issues. I mean this is a router and you would think that port forwarding would work 100% and be simple to configure.

I found this information by doing some research and I believe Merlin recommended in another thread to disable this feature along with the Smart QoS/TrendMicro features if you truly wanted to have "working" port forwarding.

I'm assuming this is an Asus bug as I have seen this show up as a problem on multiple models including the AC68U and usually the fix is turning off HW NAT acceleration.

I am considering buying this router tomorrow. I was under the impression the 5 Ghz issue was fixed according to this post below.

My 5 Ghz seems to be better since going to latest Merlin firmware and a couple of factory resets, but only time will tell. I have already ordered the AC68U and will return it if I can get my AC87U working. Would rather have the newer/faster hardware.
