RT-AC88U Problems

Have an RT-AC88U. Its been running flawless since Aug. Last night it Rebooted it self and has been very unstable since. It will reboot it self but only the power and internet light will come on and the internet is flickering pink showing connected to the modem. WiFi and Hardwired LEDs are not lit up. Firmware is 3.0.0.4.380_3941

After many reboots I was able to factory restore it. Thought I was in the clear and it crashed again. Started boot looping. Currently have it working again but feel like its only a matter of time before it happens again. Should I RMA this through Asus? Any suggestions would be great. Its been running for an hour at the moment which is sounds like nothing but it took me half a day for 60 minutes of uptime.

sounds like a power supply issue , if you can , try another power supply with the same voltage and amperage before rma it , its the one downfall of the asus

Dont have an extra power supply but I can see if I can get a hold of one. Its been running for 3 hours now after a reboot with no problems. I did put it on a laptop cooling pad. I'm tempted to take it off and see if overheating was the problem.

After 14 hours of uptime it crashed again and its been sitting like this for 30 minutes.

Had a similar issue with the latest firmware every time I changed a setting to the wifi preferences it would reboot and the radios would not activate I rolled it back and it works again perfectly

Rolled back to 3.0.0.4.380_3341 will test it out today and see if it rectifies the problem.

looks like hardware problem - goes into reboot at random points. If power supply is fine I would RMA router.

PS: if it is running for a moment I would test load it to see how it holds if CPU at 100%. If it would more likely go into reboot - then it's either power problem or something wrong with board itself.
If you cannot get another power supply then check power connector, wire. See if by wiggling connector you can force router into reboot -just an idea how to test without proper equipment.

CPU load doesnt go above 30% at max and usually hovers around 12%. I currently have everything unplugged except power on a factory reset and its just sitting there with the red light on.

well, in order to test load you need to plug something to WAN/LAN/USB3 and run some benchmarks/tests. Also, if you turn NAT acceleration OFF - this will put load on CPU. Try USB3 HDD big files transfer, that should max CPU. So that you can see if this would result in reboots.

PS: red light means your router WAN port has no IP address/disconnected.

Problem is keeping it running at the moment. I factory restored it back to default with the latest FW and it boots up and then resets with in 10 minutes with no load. Ill try and set it up again and try the NAT accel off option and see what happens with net traffic. Very frustrating for a $300 router

well, if it resets on it's own without you touching it then no need to load test. This might be bad solder or bad power supply. To rule out power supply you need to check if your current up to task (load it with say 1 Amp and look at oscilloscope but I assume you don't have one) or replace it with another one.
But either way, it looks like hardware defect, so your router is on warranty I would suggest RMA it.
