RT-AX56U iperf3 wifi speed 350Mbps from client to server and 900Mbps from server to client

KoKa

New Around Here
RT-AX56U
When testing wifi with iperf I have only ~350-400Mbps, when using reverse option I get ~900Mbps

I tried 2 latest official firmware 3.0.0.4.386_51679, 3.0.0.4.386.51665 and two merlin 3004.388.8_2, 3004.388.6_2. After each update I reset to factory then set up 5GHz network trough quick setup (just password and ssid) and tested that way, so settings were mostly automatic.
On both 3004.388.8_2, 3004.388.6_2 I tried all different settings in wifi section. For now I have set AX only 80 Mhz.
I tried disabling universal and AX beamforming, disabling OFDMA, to no difference (I'm actually surprised that disabling OFDMA still yields 800Mbps when reversed testing)
I have also tested in AC mode and speeds were as much asymmetric as in AX mode.

When I first bought the router I think I was getting 600-700 when iperf testing without reverse but it was long time ago. So I'm not sure if my router has somehow broken or it was like that from factory. I wish someone who also owns this router could test that.

(Testing with -P 2 or higher does not improve much, and -P 1 results were more compact to fit here)

TLDR: I did not downgraded enough, 386.5_2 works.

I found this thread, specifically this post https://www.snbforums.com/threads/rt-ax56u-slow-iperf3-in-one-direction.79784/#post-779022
And I can confirm, older firmware works I'm on 386.5_2 and anything newer (it being official asus firmware or merlin) falls back to 350Mbps.
Wonder if it is something that could be fixed, but since this thread is from 2022 I guess not.

Fun one depending on what version of iperf3...

iperf3 -c 192.168.1.120 -P 4 -Z -t 30 --bidir
is "-Z" the fun part or "--bidir"? Because:
Code:
T:\_Downloads\iperf3.17.1_64>iperf3.exe -c 192.168.1.120 -Z
iperf3: parameter error - this OS does not support sendfile

Without -Z it starts with TX being faster gradualy transitions to RX being faster

Code:
T:\_Downloads\iperf3.17.1_64>iperf3.exe -c 192.168.1.120 -P 4 --bidir -B 192.168.1.157 -t 30

is "-Z" the fun part or "--bidir"? Because:
Code:
T:\_Downloads\iperf3.17.1_64>iperf3.exe -c 192.168.1.120 -Z
iperf3: parameter error - this OS does not support sendfile
Without -Z it starts with TX being faster gradualy transitions to RX being faster

The -Z option is OS specific - I'm on a real OS, not the Solitaire Shell, e.g. Windows

Anyways - the --bidir switch enables concurrent traffic uplink and downlink, so it's a good flex on your adapter...

I would do a -P4 for threads to really push the load into this setup - numbers for 1Gb ethernet...
