Greeting All...

Just wanted to see if anyone else has had, or is having, such an issue as the one I am outlining below.

Wanted...USB Fail Over from main WAN post when Internet drops to a Verizon 6620L Jetpack tethered.

Router: RT-N66U
Firmware: 378.55_0
WAN Post: Cable Modem
USB Port 1: JetPack 6620L running in USB Tethering mode
USB 2: Sony 64 Gig Thumb Drive

Router Running with 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz radios with one 2.4 guest access SSID.

Issue 1: Failover does not occur after some time. What I mean by this is that if I reboot the router, and then unplug the WAN part, it will failover to the USB connection within 40 seconds. However, if the router has been running for some time, then the fail over will not occur doing the same test. It does not even seem to see the lost WAN connection as it still shows as CONNECTED. If I reboot the router, it then goes right to the USB connection and starts to use the JetPack.

Issue 2: After being on the Jetpack for some time...say 20 mins...the connection will just stop working. It still shows as connected on the main page of the RT-66U, yet no traffic. If I reboot the router, the USB connection again becomes active.

Issue 3: If doing the test failover from WAN to USB, and then connect the WAN again, it does not fallback.

Setup:

Enable Dual WAN: ON
Primary WAN: WAN
Secondary WAN: USB
Dual WAN Mode: Fail Over - Checked to Allow Fallback.

Ping Time Watch Dog...
First Time Delay: 0
Retry Interval: 5
Failover Detection Time: 30
Fallback Detection Time: 10
Enable Watch Dog: Yes
Target: www.google.com

USB Modem Setup:
Enable USB Modem: YES
Country: USA
ISP: Verizon
Dial Number: #777
USB Adapter: AUTO

Modem is detected as Novatel Wireless MiFi 6620L

Just very pondering to say the least that it seems to work fine if you do a reboot, but when some time goes by, it will either not failover or if you are on the USB modem, it will at some point disconnect you from the Internet even though the RT-66U shows it's starts as being connected.

Thank for any guidance.

Dual WAN (and USB modem support) have never been fully working properly for everyone. Those are areas Asus are constantly reworking in newer firmware releases, so you can expect even more changes (and hopefully fixes) in future releases.

Thanks Eric. Such a shame as it is something that really should be working seeing how long the RT-66U has been around and that USB modems are not anything new. Is there are Asus unit that you support that it works with?

All of Asus's routers share the same firmware code (Asuswrt).

You can wait to see if it will work properly in a future release (there's currently a lot of activity on firmware development, as shown by the numerous betas they have released this summer), or go with a different brand that might work better with USB modems. I don't know which router model you have (it's either an RT-N66U or an RT-AC66U), but I believe there are public betas of 378_7410 for both models on Asus's support site, if you want to give it a try.

You could also check to see if DD-WRT supports USB modems (no idea if it does).

I run your firmware as it seems to work well. (Other than the USB issues that are not your fault.) I run an RT-N66U. (Opps, forgot a letter.)
