New Around Here
Like the title says, I have installed the Merlin firmware version 376.49_4 to the N66 router and it initially blows it out of the water with speed. Which is great, but within a day, my speeds slow to a crawl and my connections just lag to the point where a router reset is the only thing that keeps it moving.

As I understood it, Merlin FW was supposed to be the most reliable as far as uptime went. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Do you have hard drives with lots of files on them plugged into USB ports, with DLNA turned on? Have you looked at memory utilization, comparing it just after reset and then a day later? Do wired clients slow as much as wireless? What cable modem or other kind of router does the Asus plug into? How many wireless and wired users are there?

Did you do a full reset to factory defaults after installing the latest firmware? Does the router work OK if you revert back to some earlier firmware?

If the problem is only with wireless clients, what bands and settings are you using?

try firmware in my signature. sdk5 drivers seem to do the trick.

the 3.0.0.4.276 firmware is also really good. these do have security holes but cmon, whos gonna know you have an asus n66u router with a certain firmware? they cant hack it if they dont know what router/firmware u using

the newer firmware have problems with wifi dropping. i've tested all of the new ones (merlin, stock asus, and fork 374.43 - these drop my wifi)

I have the same problem with degrading wifi performance on my RT-AC87U. Can't say when it started, at least the 3-4 latest firmwares have this problem.

Wifi Drop

Hi All,

Even i see lot of times WIFI drop after updating - Firmware:376.49_4

Specially 5G drops or many a times when connected says no internet connection.

How do i get this firmwares ?

Use: N66u Merlin Firmware 374.35_4-sdk5 or 270.26b

i dont see a link in your signature

I too had a few issues (for the first time) with _4... I lost my entire settings on the router (although I always do a configuration backup) - but that hadn't happened before. Also, when I reset everything back up, I was periodically losing my MAC to Name translations - which impacted my Parental Controls and my Port Forwarding. These anomolies seem to have cleared - but now I am seeing sluggish performance with 78-85% RAM utilization steadily. In fact I researched the thread on how to reboot the router on a schedule just to get around this issue. While more noticable in this current release, it seems that with every new firmware version - my router tends to slow after several days with no reboot. To answer the question above - yes, I have alot of files on two SSD USB drives, but I do not have DLNA turned on.

High RAM usage is normal, it's Linux using unused memory for disk buffering. Those buffers get freed whenever another service actually needs that memory.

No hard drives plugged into the USB ports. I hadn't noticed any major differences in memory utilization. Wired do not slow comparably. Cable modem is an Aris CM820A WoW internet provided. When I hook directly to it, speeds are perfect. Wireless users currently hovers between 4-9.

I did a full factory reset, still experiencing problems. Worked decently well on the previous stock firmware.

For wireless: 2.4ghz- 20 band - WPA2 - 5ghz -40 band - WPA2.

Where are you finding this older firmware, tried the SDK, same results.
