RT-N66U integrated switch drops to 100 Mbits/s when overheating

Hi,

I'm facing the same issue than the last summer.

The router's integrated switch drops from 1000 Base-T mode to 100 Base-T mode when overheating.

It's kind of frustrating because I checked my cables, wall jack, patch panel jack and so on without finding any issue related to the wiring of my house.

Thanks you.

Avoid overheating of the router.
Electronic components tend to degrade in performance or even quit at too high temperatures.

Is the router located in an open, ventilated space?
Is the router placed on a hard surface?
Try using the supplied stand to place the router vertical (antenna's and connectors end up on top).
Some users have reported the use of an external cooling fan to help the router stay cool.

Why is your router overheating? Bad placement...restricted airflow or direct sun; excessive load on USB ports; overclocking; dirty heatsink; excessive power output from wifi transmitters? Once in a while, it is just a bad component on the PC board. The fan will help but it is not the best solution. Have you opened the case to look for contaminated heatsink and/or signs of overheating (discoloration, swelling caps, etc.) It could be that the heatsink was installed with inadequate heatsink compound (don't know if there is a good way to check/remediate this). A normal rtn66u runs pretty warm to the touch but not so much as to affect performance.
