Hi all,
Very strange problem going on that I could do with an expert, or more expert than me, view on.
I have a Sky Hub 2 SR102 as the main router connected to the main socket in the house. Never had a particular problem with it until the last few weeks where bandwidth would suddenly fall through the floor. The Sky engineer diagnosis was that 'something' was using the bandwidth. With that information I borrowed an RT-N66U using Asuswrt-Merlin from a friend with a hope of being able to monitor the bandwidth usage and narrow down the culprit.
Fast forward to the configuration. SR102 still as the main router with wireless switched off and the Asus connected as the wireless router using 2.4ghz only. For the most part there are/were no issues but randomly devices will lose connectivity, not from the wireless as they remain connected, but to the internet. A few minutes or so later it'll start working again and this is not every device when it happens. I've been working away happily on my laptop whilst the other half is complaining her phone isn't working. As part of this setup I also have some LIFX bulbs which were losing connection to the LIFX cloud on a regular basis resulting in them being pretty useless.
To resolve the issue with the LIFX bulbs I had to connect them back to the SR102 yesterday and there's been no issue since with them losing connection to the cloud. Whilst messing around yesterday I amended the DHCP pool to .2 to .99 with all my devices (apart from the LIFX bulbs) with static IPs from .100 up to eliminate any IP issues. No issues here or so I thought. Whilst at work today I got a message that the internet wasn't working again but when logging into the router I could see the device connected that should have been. This evening I've enabled the 5ghz network and set to the same SSID and password and I can see devices connecting to it. The same device that was having issues again today, an iPhone, kept saying there was no connectivity on the wireless network until I disabled 'Enable Manual Assignment' under the LAN DHCP settings. The iPhone immediately connected properly and then I re-enabled static IPs to test and the iPhone didn't experience any further issues.
What I can see though is whilst watching the device list, devices are dropping off the list and reappearing again. Is this normal? When they reappear the access time hasn't been reset (unless it's switched between 2.5 and 5ghz) which makes me think they're not disconnecting and there's an issue with the device list but the iPhone issues did coincide with it disappearing from the list. As far as I can tell also, aside from the LIFX bulbs, it seems to be only mobile devices that 'lose' connectivity but that may just be a case of us using them more so noticing it more readily.
I suppose my question is will the logs tell me if devices are connecting and reconnecting? If so, where are they specifically? Is there an obvious config that I've missed etc? Obviously there could be a hardware fault with the router itself as it isn't new but there are no known issues with it. Any ideas or help appreciated!
