Just installed this router in AP mode to my FiOS actiontec and I have a few questions:

1. is it better to connect the RT-66U WAN port to the Actiontec FiOS router or via the LAN port? I have an NAS and Win7 connected to the Asus via the LAN ports.

2. is there any way to set the router NETBiOS name so its identified on the network and not just it IP address.

1. I never like Fios' router, I use my N66u as the main router and use their router behind as a moca device. I have better speed with the n66u as the internet router.

2. using the fios or n66u router?

The name can be set under USB Applications -> Servers Center -> Miscellaneous setting.

Since I require CallerID and remote FiOS access, the FiOS router has to remain the main router. I'd like to name the RT-N66U so it resolves on my local network but I can't find any setting in the GUI. I set a static IP for the Asus outside the FiOS DHCP address range to negate getting a new DHCP lease.

I decided to setup the ASUS in router mode instead of AP mode. Took a lot of resets to get the config correct but it seems to be working.

ASUS WAN connected to FiOS LAN (10/100mb only) using static IP 192.168.1.2, FiOS router address 192.168.1.1, then NAS and Win7 PC connected to ASUS LAN ports. Seems to be working fine but will this have an affect on speed/throughput? The ASUS set the LAN address to 192.168.2.1 and DHCP/NAT have to be enabled so wireless clients can connect.

I do like the other GUI features not available in AP mode (traffic monitor). Any comments on this config?

Whsbuss - can you detail how you did this? I am on a FIOS-like system here in Canada (Telus Optik) where I need the moca (cable-company supplied) router/modem before the RT-N66U, but I want to use the full router mode and NOT the AP mode. I need some help!

Help with Ausus RT-N66U and Actiontec MI424WR Rev. I

Hi whsbuss,

I have the same router as yours and recently switched to Verizon FIOS for internet. The installer provided the Actiontec MI424WR Rev. I router which suppose to be wireless N. I didn't like this router since so I attempted to bridge it and make ths Asus as a main router. It didn't work :-( ...and I ended up making the Asus router a second router with it's main purpose is to provide wireless for all devices (DHCP server turned off) . I also turned off wireless on the Actiontec router. Since I'm not happy with this setting. Can you help answer the following questions:

1. You mentioned that you made the ASUS router the main router. I have the cable connecting from the LAN port of the Actiontec to the ASUS's LAN port. Does that mean my setup is in AP mode ? what if I change the cabling to ActionTec's LAN port to Asus's WAN port ?

2. The ASUS router came with some cool tools liek AICloud, FTP server stuff that allows me to access the USB drives from outside via http and ftp. Now, with this setup, it's not do-able. I'm guessing I need to configure port forwarding , but not sure how to do it. Have you tried it ? if you have can you help provide the info.

Thank you very much for your help.
