RT5300 is my main router, I have another 5300 and a ac3100 Which should I use as a node?

I currently have a 5300 as main and the 5300 and 3100 as nodes, one in my home (3100) and one about 100 ft away in my shop ( 5300 ) I am thinking of doing away with the shop node as it does work but isnt always reliable. Should I use two 5300 in my home or 5300/3100? Thanks

I'd use the matched set of 5300s... the 2nd 5.0 GHz band will be a dedicated wireless backhaul.

So will My Main broadcast all three channels and the 5300 node would only broadcast two? Or will they both broadcast all three?

From what I understand...

The 5300 tri-band wireless router has two 5.0 GHz bands and a 2.4 GHz band. One of the 5.0 GHz bands is dedicated to the wireless backhaul. Wireless clients use the other 5.0 GHz band. The 2.4 GHz band is shared with the wireless backhaul (subject to wireless distance/RSSI) and with wireless clients.

The 3100 dual-band wireless router shares both bands with the wireless backhaul and with wireless clients.

There may also be some inherent advantages to having the same 5300 hardware and firmware on both ends of your wireless backhaul.

Maybe you can route a wired backhaul to the garage for the 3100... its wired backhaul could daisy chain over the above dedicated 5.0 GHz wireless backhaul (subject to wireless distance/RSSI) for pretty good performance without impacting any wireless clients. Or, connect the garage wired backhaul directly to the router node (no daisy chain).

Running a wire to the shop is not easily done at this time, I have been using 2 Nano stations which I plan on hooking back up at this time for the shop. Currently the AIMESH does work out there but it sometimes connects to me to the house and instead of the shop and it then becomes a bad signal.

You should be able to see garage node MACs and Tx/Rx rates in the router Wireless Log for the garage node 2.4 and 5.0 GHz backhauls. Given 100' to another building, I suspect the wireless backhauls to the garage node are marginal... if so, not sure what the garage wireless clients decide to do then... stick to the garage node with no Internet or hop to a weak 2.4 GHz signal from the house that has Internet. Point being... confirm/fix the garage wireless backhaul health first.

If you want two routers to connect via WiFi, you should use identical routers with identical firmware.

Why did you stop using Nanostations? Looks to be a good solution.

Another solution to consider is to use house current ethernet extenders.

How much data traffic is expected for the "shop"?
 
The reason I wanted to try the AIMESH is i wanted to get rid of some of the clutter from the extra wires of the nano station. Currently I have them hanging in a window of my home and one hanging in the window of my shop. The Nano stations I have are 2.4 Band but and when hooked to a Netgear router only transmits 2.4, When hooked to either of the ASUS routers I get a 2.4 and 5 Band. Ethernet extenders would they work though a sub panel?
