Guys

I scheduled my AC86U router to reboot every day by enabling the "Reboot Scheduler" from the Administration tab. For the most part it reboots fine, but every couple of days or so it just won`t start after rebooting.
Occasionally it also fails to start after a manual reboot.
The lights go off and it won`t start, but the attached USB drive keeps the light on, and nothing else.

This is happening for quite a while and between versions.
I just updated to the latest firmware Version 384.15_beta1 but the issue remains.

Any insights to this?
Thank you

Think it`s a known issue with RT-86u that it sometimes turns off instead on reboot

@Markfree the only times I've seen this issue with mine and my customers RT-AC86U's was when they were first bought.

After flashing RMerlin firmware (you will want to use the RMerlin 384.15_0 final release, btw) and following the M&M Config (and also flashing the (same) firmware twice, with a full reset to factory defaults in between), I haven't seen this issue again.

When was the last time you did a full reset (M&M Config)?

What firmware were you previously on before you flashed the Beta 1 it has installed now?

I had the issue when running stock firmware and it still happens on occasion now, running 384.14. I never did a full M&M config, as I installed Merlin way before I was even on this forum. Perhaps one day I'll find enough time to do this, but it doesn't bother me enough to have to set up the router from scratch again ;)

Would be interesting to know what actually causes it and how the M&M config can potentially fix it. My money was always on it being related to the PSU, but apparently that's not it.

When flashing between RMerlin and stock firmware, it is advised to do a full reset.

Too many variables between the code that can get the router easily mixed up in a hard to pinpoint/diagnose fashion.

A proper reset (and flashing it at least twice with the same firmware) goes a long way towards getting the router firmware to a good/known state. :)

I completely agree with you. I just wish I had seen your great guide sooner. At some point I would be prepared to put the time in, but it's not worth going deaf in my right ear from all the nagging that the internet is down :D

@Chris_J, noted! Our hearing is important!

But don't think this takes an abnormally long time either. Even for someone doing this for the first time, in half an hour the network should be usable in a basic way. :)

I just finished reading the post recommended by Zastoff and it was a great insight. Thanks.

I updated my router yesterday from a 384.12 (I thtink) Merlin firmware, but the problem was older than that. Since I boutght the unit back in 2018 it presented this problem.

After all the helpfull considerations given at the previous discussion, I'm more inclined to beleive the problem is power related as my current power supply is very small (1.75A) and I plugged 1 usb drive and another flash drive to the router. Thanks Val.
I'm not discarding a software issue though.

I'll try to test reboots with and without drives connected.
