Hi -

I am trying to find a good network consultant that can help me with some configuration issues on my small hotel network in Asia. It isn't easy finding qualified people out here and I would be perfectly happy if there was somebody I could work with on an as needed basis (via Skype & email) to help out when I'm having some issues.
Equipment is pfSense router box, NetGear 724T switches and Ubiquiti Unify WiFi access points. Need somebody that really understands VLAN implementation on NetGear boxes (802.1q based not port based)

Can anybody help me out with some recommendations for such a person/company?

Thanks

I have the same switch you have but gave up on it because it crapped out on jumbo frames. I did use VLAN 802.1q but it didnt work well with my routerboards because routerOS use different definitions and numbers (they can work together but it is complicated to get right because of how you can attach VLANs to different things in routerOS). I replaced my netgear with a CRS and it works well now.

VLANS are simple that you dont really need to hire a consultant.

Thanks - Hmm. Jumbo frame problems. OK. I haven't run into that yet.

I understand VLANs are relatively simple. I understand the theory no problem. I have been able to implement VLAns on my smaller hotel and smaller network with no issues. However - I am working on a larger, more complex, live network with a hotel that normally runs 70 - 80% full.

I would really like to have the high degree of confidence that I have the correct configuration specifically for my switches before trying the implementation.

Thanks

with VLAN if it works on the small scale it'd work on the big scale as long as the device is reliable and you account for sufficient bandwidth and processing. Than again it is a good idea to hire someone who would actually know what they're doing if you can but if you cant find one it may be better to take the plunge sometimes. Make a backup of your current configuration so you can rollback quickly if you run into problems. Personally i dont think that switch would hold up to full capacity for long but if you're using a newer version with 3 fans than it might hold up. I believe the current hardware version of it is 4. Just to be safe disable other features if you can and make the configurations as lean as possible. Use features like storm control too as that may help.

When dealing with a live network try to plan out and test it out offline before changing the configurations. A few minutes downtime is tolerable but try to make the downtime progressive so it only affects a few at a time.

What is the issue you're trying to solve?

I literally grew up in the hotel industry, implemented the wifi networks at all our properties, built our internal networks and site-to-site vpns, and have played a little bit with vlans to segregate some traffic. I'm available for an initial consultation to see if I can be of service (no charge).

its not an issue he is trying to solve, he wants someone who knows what hes doing to help configure the network correctly while it is live and avoid the network going down horribly with a lot of problems. If you read more he mentions that he understands VLANs but he hasnt configured it on those switches and ive already mentioned that the VLAN implementation is simple on it but he just wants to make sure that when he changes things everything works, minimal downtime, customers are happy and he doesnt lose his job.

I would help but i've had bad luck trying to get it to work on my netgear switch mainly because some features turn out to cause a lot of problems and not work properly which is why i bought a new switch which can also combine ports in any way i like too with as many devices i want. But as for as vlan goes on the switch you first need to create the VLANs you want to use on the switch. You than go to PVID and set the ports to be a member of the vlans you want there and than go to each vlan and add ports you want it to be a member of. Each port can only be and must be a member of 1 untagged VLAN which you will need to set in PVID. The ports can be a member of multiple VLANs but they each are binded to a single VLAN in the switch at least which i think may be the port in which the VLANs communicate with another VLAN? Im not too sure about this but as i mentioned before try it on a small scale offline before implementing it.
