Hi guys, im not a IT person. im just wanna have the best out of my internet. My ISP speed is 1gbs fibre. im using a asus AC56u. 5g wise im getting decent speed of 240mbs(speedtest) but my 2.4g only at 40mbs. my mum is using a AC56s but her 2.4g is always at around 120-140mbs. is it somehing wrong with my settings? im using merlin firmware 380.61.

It seems like your 2.4GHz band is at 20MHz width? If you have very few/no WiFi neighbors close to you, you may want to try 40MHz width to see the throughput increase (but be sensitive to your neighbors throughput needs too; any increase you see will be a corresponding decrease for all WiFi networks that are close by) .

Of course, this will also depend on your device(s) too. Are they capable of 2 antennae and 2 streams 0r more?

You can also manually set the primary channel the router uses to broadcast too (on both bands). Not using 'auto' for this setting may provide much higher throughput for your devices (if they're capable of it). You will have to test with each channel on each band (only need to test channels 1, 6 and 11 on 2.4GHz band) to see if a particular channel is optimum for your wireless environment and devices.

i had tried all channel manual selection.. but still same. when i use the "site survey" in Asus wireless page. to my horror, my area is swamped with 2.4G. i think thats the main reason for my low speed. guess there nothing i can do abt it anymore.

When you updated the firmware, did you do a full reset to factory defaults and then manually and minimally configure the router to secure it and connect to your ISP?

Did you 'forget' the old ssid's on all your devices and then re-associate all devices with your router again? Or, just simply use a new ssid for each band?

You can try john9527's fork of RMerlin's firmware and also hggomes firmware too. Both may give better results than what you're currently using.

As you can see, there is quite a bit you can do to (possibly) improve your network performance. The question is, do you want to invest the time to do it? ;)
