Setting up a Network from Scratch

redge

New Around Here
First, let me say that if I'm beginning to get a sense of what is involved in setting up a network, it is due to the excellent articles on this site.

I want to set up a network that will consist of a main computer and three client computers. The main computer is in a sunroom with large windows.

The client computers are in three other buildings that we have that are 50', 100' and 350'
away respectively. These buildings are all in the same general direction covering a span of not more than 45 degrees. There is a clear sightline from the main computer to the first two buildings. There are some trees obstructing the sight to the furthest building, but if necessary it might be possible to put the wireless gear or an antenna or repeater on the second floor of the main building and clear the trees. The buildings are all made of wood.

The network will be in a very thinly populated area. Consequently, frequency interference is not a major issue. The nearest network is miles away. We do have wireless phones and a microwave in each of the buildings, but these are used infrequently.

The main computer is connected to the internet via satellite through a Surfbeam SM2101-50 modem. The main computer and the client computers will be used mainly for general browsing and e-mail. The main computer is also sometimes used for streaming media and large downloads/uploads, but this is infrequent. There is no need for file sharing between the computers. I just want to make it possible for the client computers to connect to the internet.

I would be obliged for suggestions on how to set up this network and what gear to get for both the main computer and the client computers. The computers probably have g cards in them, but we are about to replace some of the computers and we are prepared to buy external n cards for whatever we don't replace. While I don't want to throw away money, and while this is not a commercial operation, I am prepared to spend up to $US1000 on equipment.

Thanks.

Search the forums for "outdoor wireless". You'll find some good suggestions.
In general, you'll get best results with outdoor antenna/bridge and antenna/client combinations that let you put the antenna outdoors and run either a long USB or preferably Ethernet cable to the computer you want to connect.

This thread links to some of these types of products from EnGenius and Ubiquiti.

Thanks Tim,

The link you gave me and the discussions in the threads that I found with the search terms you suggested were extremely helpful.

I can easily put some of this gear outdoors and run a cable to it.

If anyone else has comments, I'm most interested.

Thanks.
