Hi.

My main modem/router is a DSL AC68u. For awhile now (long enough that I don't remember how i configured it) I've had my RT AC87u hooked up as an access point, providing wifi as well as a wired connection for 2 pcs.

However my modem recently died and while I'm waiting for the warranty I hooked up a TPLink TD-w8961N. The TPLink works fine, however my 87u not so much. I factory reset it, set it in AP mode, and gave it the same static ip as before, on the TPLink. However the PCs connected via ethernet don't seem to pick up. Wireless is fine though.

Anyone have an idea what I'm missing?

and gave it the same static ip as before,

put this in dynamic mode and restart both modem and the 87u and make sure the adapters in those ethernet connected device also are set to obtain dhcp and dns automatically

Just to be clear I set the TPLink Modem/Router to assign a static IP to the 87u, shouldn't that be fine?

Otherwise to login to the 87u I'd have to check its current ip on the TPLink first?

Also just to add to this, the PCs don't seem to register that there is a wired connection available at all. I've double checked that both sets of cables are plugged in.

terminology is the key here , so your saying you have reserved an ip address on the tp link for the asus which is different to setting a static ip address on the asus

if its in ap mode i see no real reason to access the asus but thats fine

again check your client ethernet adapters are set to obtain dhcp and dns automatically

Ok sorry for the bad wording.

I've checked the settings now and on both PCs, both are set to obtain automatically. However it also shows Network Cable unplugged. I've checked and double checked the cables, and both cables are plugged properly at both ends. The piece of hardware I replaced isn't even involved at this end, so I am at a loss.

just a question , have you disabled the wifi on the tp link ? to make sure your connect wifi wise to the asus and not the tp link

access the asus gui and see what it says as far as wan connection goes

Wifi isn't a problem, I can connect to either wifi fine, and I had given them distinct SSIDs while trying to trouble shoot this. I've disabled it now though to avoid any confusion.

No errors in the log. Wifi from the RT works, and provides internet, so I think its connecting to the TP Link correctly. It just seems the remaining ethernet ports are somehow disabled?

just to be sure have you tried connecting ether of the ethernet connected devices to the tp link to see if they get a connection

Yes, I unplugged the cable leading from the TP Link to the router, and plugged it into a PC instead. The TP Link picked it up and I had internet access.

And if you use the 87U as a AP, I think you should not use the wan-port, just connect your tp-link in one of the four lan-ports
