Several Devices can no longer connect via wireless after upgrade.

New Around Here
I had my internet speed upgraded last week. My ISP did the cutover before I was ready, I came home and had to activate it.

Since then, my Roku player and my wireless printer (HP) can no longer see the router. They can see other devices, but not the router.

My HP laptop and my IPhone can see the AP, but not these devices.

The router is an ASUS RT-AC5300

I'm running Merlin 380.66_4, but I've tried 380.66_2 and 380_64_4 to avail. The AP is invisable to these devices. I've turned off Airtime fairness in Merlin, renamed the SSID's multiple times and tried to above firmware versions. Done multiple power cycles and a reset. No change. Control channel on the legacy channel has been set to 36.

These devices worked fine on Merlin until this change over with ISP, I cleared all stored network settings on both devices and still I do not see my router. As I've said the Roku and Printer see my neighbors AP, just not mine and the my Merlin router still works fine for my phone and laptop. It's absolutely crazy! I'm going mad over it. Can anyone offer some ideas? Settings, causes, anything? I'm at a total loss now.

I'm having essentially the same problem with the same router (RT-AC5300).

The 2.4ghz network is not visible. To make things worse, when I click on the ssid of the 2.4ghz network (or select it in the dropbox), the gui refreshes to the 2.4ghz network, but then immediately refreshes back to the the 5ghz_2 network. I can never actually get to the 2.4ghz wireless config screen because the web page refreshes immediately and takes me out of it.

Thanks.

Do any of the 'missing' devices show up in the Network Map in the router's gui, or in a nerwork scan on a smartphone app such as Network Toolbox for iPhone/iPad?

Have you.recently carried out a firmware upgrade that might have required a rest to factory default settings and forgotten to do so?

You may also want to try rebooting your switches if you have not all ready. I have seen them hang and give troubles after network changes.

I'm running the 'current version', 3.80.66_4, which was a recent upgrade. How do I know if I'm supposed to do a factory reset? I don't see that in the changelog. And, is there a special procedure for that when using asuswrt-merlin?

Thanks much.

If you continually update to the next release then you should not need to do a factory reset.
If you jump more than two or three versions then a factory reset is highly recommended.

A factory reset is also a good way to get rid of eventual erratic or other unwanted behaviour.
This can be performed in the Administration/Restore/Save/Upload Setting tab.
DO NOT do a restore to factory default and then restore settings from a previous save. This defeats the purpose as the same settings as before would be applied.
A factory reset and subsequent manual configuration is the best way to breath new live into a router.
A factory reset resets all settings of the currently installed firmware to default and will require you to configure all settings again. It will not restore the original ASUS firmware the router was shipped with.

Here's an extract from Merlin's FAQs at

https://www.snbforums.com/threads/faq-nvram-and-factory-default-reset.22822/

"
If the router is booting correctly, then you can use any of the following:

  • While router is running, press the reset button for about 5 secs, then release it. Router will then reboot.
  • From the webui, on the same page where you can save/restore saved settings, there is a button to restore factory default values"

That you are asking this question suggests your router may be long overdue a factory reset. And, as thelonelycoder has said, failing to do so could cause all sorts of odd behaviours, not least on the wireless side.

I'd suggest you read Merlin's FAQs page thoroughly because it explains a lot and won't take long. And do note that, ordinarily, you would reset the router to factory default settings AFTER flashing the new firmware.

You said there was nothing in the changelog about doing a restoration to factory default settings; you would really need to have looked at the changelogs of any intermediate firmwares between the one you were coming from and the one you were going to flash, and that assumes the router had already been factory reset at the appropriate point in the past.

It sounds like you need to do a factory reset if only to rule out that most obvious cause of problems before carrying out any further troubleshooting, should it be necessary.

Make a note of all your settings before you reset, of course. In the past, I've taken screenshots of every page. It's time-consuming, but not as time-consuming as trying to troubleshoot weird behaviour.
