Simpliest setup to compile firmware?

I'd like to set up a development environment to compile Merlin's fw and change a few things that aren't on the priority list for the AC68U....things like turn off the jffs syslog, fix syslog scrolling, fix the sharing alert, etc.

I've seen the wiki, but am wondering if anyone has some advice on the simpliest way to set up a system. I'm looking at digging out an old laptop I have and dedicating it to this, so don't have to worry about any existing operating systems or apps.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Hi,

I suggest to install Virtualbox on your CURRENT computer and a virtual machine with Ubuntu Linux and then follow Merlin's Wiki.

You will be as happy as I am with this setup!!! :D

With kind regards
Joe

Any recommendation on what release of Ubuntu to use? The wiki starts with release 12 then gives some changes to be made to use release 13. Current is release 14.

I suggest you use 12.04 x64 LTS as the Asus build enviorment is very unstable for other OS's and constantly has problems relating to different versions of autoconf etc.

Here is the script I use to compile firmware for the N56U/AC66U/AC68U which should give you a good idea how to setup the build enviorment from a clean install.

Thanks to everyone for their input/advice. In the end, I just followed the wiki, installing VMware Player and Ubuntu 12.04 x64 LTS. (The VirtualBox solution seemed to limit me to 32 bit VMs, and was not obvious how to save the VM to other than the boot drive. VMware just plain made it easy).

With one small oops (updated the wiki to make it a bit clearer), it just worked. Now, to learn how to use Git :)
