Slow AC56R Connection

Occasional Visitor
Just paired HP Pavilion g7 laptop with TP-Link Archer 4tu ac1200 USB 3.0 wireless adapter.

Router is ASUS RT AC56R router with Merlin firmware 374.40.

Line of sight distance for wireless is 40 feet with no wall.

Best connection speed I can achieve is 400Mbps when I position laptop right next to router. When I move the 40 feet away, my connection speed drops to 180-240Mbps.

All my 5ghz router settings are set at default. Are there any Router settings that I can change to improve the connection speed?

Thanks

Connection rate drops as distance increases. It is the byproduct of WiFi.

Every single WiFi router review on the web has made.it very clear for the past decade.

Sorry, but I missed the part of your post that explains how I might "improve" the connection speed via the router settings.
