Slow Response

I have the Asus RT-AC66UB1 router with the latest Merlin firmware installed. I also installed Diversion and Skynet. Since installing those two programs, I've noticed accessing the router via SSH and its web interface has become excruciating slow. I'm not sure if its a combo of both these programs or just one that's causing the problem, however I do know Merlin was running fine prior to their installation. The only way to fix it is to reboot the router.

Is there a way to resolve this? I don't want to have to keep doing that every few days to access the routers settings. The programs are installed on a 32GB USB stick. When creating the swap partition I had it create 1GB.

Sounds weird that connections through SSH and WebUI are slow. For the WebUI, try the following and see if you notice any difference.
- Clear browser cache and cookies.
- Try a different browser to access WebUI.
- Disable QoS (not sure how this affects, but has helped users in the past).
- Try the WebUI from a different device.

I tried using FF on two different PC's (one wired, one wifi) and Safari on my iPhone and no luck. I'll try disabling QoS when I get home tonight and see if that helps.

Are you using USB 3? If so switch to USB2. Usually the swap needs to be equal to RAM in your case 256 meg.

I went ahead and reinstalled both, this time setting the swap to 256. Hopefully that will resolve the problem. If not, I’ll comment here. Thanks again to everyone who offered suggestions.

Are you using USB 3? If so switch to USB2. Usually the swap needs to be equal to RAM in your case 256 meg.

How does the swap size affect this? I have a 86U (ram 512Mb) with swap size 2Gb and no problem.

So it looks like it’s Skynet. Both CPU run at 100% and in less than 24 hrs slows the router web UI and SSH to a crawl. Not sure why that’s happening. Oh well, no Skynet for me.

I would find it hard to believe it is Skynet causing you these issues.

I've just set up a few Asus RT-AC66UB1's for customers and the last one I kept here for over 72 hours to monitor it. No issues at all, here or at the customer's site where it's been running without issues for over 48 hours now.

The order of things that I do to get a router working to a customer for all these Asus RT-AC66UB1's:

1. Flash RMerlin's 384.12
2. Reset to factory defaults including checking the box to 'Initialize all settings...'.
3. Perform a WPS erase.
4. Flash the same firmware once more (384.12) (a few of the Asus RT-AC66UB1's were shipped with 380.xxx firmware...).
5. Set up the router with new SSID's and passwords (different than what the customer was using) making sure to have 8 characters for the SSID's and 16 characters for the passwords. All with just alphanumeric characters, no special characters, no punctuation, and no smiley faces.
6. Set up Cloudflare DoT in the WAN pages.
7. Set up DNSFilter on the LAN pages to 'Router'.
8. Set up amtm following the amtm Step-by-Step guide in the following order:
   1. amtm
   2. format USB drive to Ext4 with journaling enabled in the USB 2.0 port or the USB 3.0 port set to USB 2.0 speeds.
   3. Enable disk check after router reboots after the formatting above.
   4. Create a swap file (I always use the 2.0 GB size).
   5. Install Diversion Standard (which includes Entware and pixelserv).
   6. Install Skynet.
   7. Start Diversion and enable Skynet integration (amtm/Diversion will ask you to do so the first time you run it after Skynet is installed).
   8. Install the rest of the scripts amtm currently supports (except for spdMerlin).
   9. Let the router run for at least 15 minutes with the above configuration.
   10. Reboot, wait at least 10 minutes and then test that all functions work properly after a reboot.
   11. Also, check the disk check log in amtm to verify that the USB drive is working properly.
   12. Reboot the router after an hour or more of use. This makes the networks I deliver and set up as stable as they can be.

With the above steps followed for each Asus RT-AC66UB1 router I have installed in the last few weeks, I haven't seen a single issue with any of them.

On a whim I tried one more time. I didn’t flash the router — I didn’t want to lose all my personalized settings again — but did format the USB stick and reinstalled Skynet and Diversion. It’s been running for 24 hrs without issue so far, so I’m cautiously optimistic.
