I have no use for it and also the fact i am getting a second rt ax86u as a mesh i want both

Rt ax86s and rt ax86u pro to be on same stock firmware so the mesh is better

My understanding is:

1. Hard reset the router
2. Go into the settings and manually install the firmware from the asus website

And thats it?

and just like that i will have new stock firmware? I wont have to fiddle with ip addresses and static ip address or go in to amend something

Yes that's all you need to do. Resetting the router wipes out all configuration changes you have made (username, password, SSIDs, DHCP, etc.). So when you connect to the router after the factory reset you will be at the Quick Internet Setup.
