My rt-n66u seems to be developing a problem. The last couple of days my wireless speed using speedtest is really slow. I pay for 30/3 Mbps. Using Merlin's 270.26b and the latest 354.28b1 I get download speeds around 3 Mbps.
I hooked up my old linksys e3000 with stock fw, same wireless channel, encryption and I get 29Mbps.

Any ideas why?

If your neighborhood is too crowded by other wireless routers the reason could be the width of the wireless channel. The default for RT-N66U is 20/40. I don't know what is the default for e3000. Try to change from 20/40 to 20 MHz.

Sorry I meant to post that. I always set the 2.4ghz to 20mhz.

There is an issue with RT-N66U and some Wi-Fi client adapters. Try to search the forum about this. There were something about Intel adapters .... not quite sure as I have no problems with my Wi-Fi clients.

Just to help isolate the issue and confirm it is specific to wifi: is your speed normal if you use an Ethernet cable?

Also, try enabling or disabling Interference Management on the Professional page.

Yes, the PC connected by Ethernet gets full speed, regardless.

I might have solved the problem, although I don't know how.
I used inssidr on my laptop, a wifi analyzer app on my iPad, picked the clearest channel and get 3Mbps download.
Set the channel to auto and I get full speed. I've always picked the least used channel, since that's what everyone advises and it's most logical. It doesn't make sense.
Sorry for the wasted time.

No waste of time. It is interesting that an apparent clear channel gets less speed. Wonder if it is some generic 2.4 GHz device.. Phone, bluetooth, baby monitor, door bell..

The key point is that even INSSIEDR might led you down the garden path.
A valuable lesson.
:)

That would be my guess as well. Remember, other wifi APs aren't the only source of interference in the 2.4 GHz band. InSSIDer can only look at one portion of those potential sources.

4 wiimotes, 4 xbox 360 wireless controller, 4 ps3 controllers, any combination of these can have some side effect on the 2.4 band. I remembered sometime unable to move a wiresless mouse (logitech unifier) smoothly due to above, after we switch from wi to pc gaming without turning off the other controllers.
