Could you guys give me some input on this. I remember back some yrs the business I worked at had to pay the ISP more money for a Static IP to setup their website. Also if I remember correctly back then my home internet service had a floating IP. But for several yrs now I've checked my home IP address and it has remained the same even though I don't pay for a Static IP. Do all cable providers give out IPs that stay the same now?

I realize they may not garauntee that it stay the same if you don't pay for a Static but it seems to not change anymore.

That's quite common. The DHCP server on your ISP's local segment will typically give the same IP address to the same MAC address. So provided your router's MAC address doesn't change (because you got a new router) the IP address doesn't change.

It's not always true, it depends on how much competition there is for IP addresses in your local area. If you disconnected your router for a few days, when you turn it back on you'll probably find that you've got a different IP address because the previous one has been given to someone else.

Also, if your ISP changes their local equipment your IP will also change.

Some ISP do and some don’t charge you for the static IP, the ISP I used to have when I had dsl gave me the static ip for free, they just made me write them a letter asking for it, now I have cable and they ask $8/month for the static ip
