After looking around for some time, I bought the Synology 209+ Version II (thanks Tim for your comment) and a Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 with 1TB as first drive.
I had it up and running in no time and all works just fine.
I have an AMD dual 64bit PC with Vista64 and many Lenovo and IBM Notebooks with XP/Vista32. Even an old IBM with Win2000 works perfect with it.
Made some tests with different routers and switches, with DHCP or static IP, all worked immediately.
Also noise or vibration is nothing worth speaking about (with the Barracuda 7200.12 1TB).
As the 209+II has the same electronics as the 409+, I am really surprised that other people (like dogdob) had so much trouble with it.
Performance seems to be very good after a week of usage, but I will now start some tests and repost a comment when done so...
From my point of view a clear recommendation!
