As the heading suggests, I got this error quite a number of times during backup - Error [206] - filename too long

stevech, have not tried "SecondCopy" yet (as per your recommentadion in another thread) because I stumbled upon "Synology Data Replicator 3" and thought that it would be "purpose driven"/"proprietery" and should work best.

So my question is this:
Is this a general problem with Synology?
Is it only a problem with SDR 3?
Does "SecondCopy" have the same issue?

Second copy hasn't given that error.
To minimize the too long errors, use a very short path name for the destination folder. You might have a small number of files causing this.

Second copy has a free trial, if you want to compare.

Thanks again fir helping. I have installed the trial version and I will see how it goes. First impressions are good. Something I found a little annoying is the programme constantly telling me it is not connected to the NAS when the NAS is off or not connected. I did have it set to backup on startup and when files change, but maybe another setting will not be so annoying.

SecondCopy will log errors if the NAS is off-line but of course, only if you have a SecondCopy profile that tries to write to the NAS. If you take the NAS off-line for some reason, you can disable SecondCopy manually - right-click on SecondCopy's icon in the task bar and choose "suspend". Then reverse that when you put the NAS back on line.

In my case, the NAS is always on from 7AM to 1AM daily- per the power schedule I set in DSM of the DS212.

Because all my data files and some application files are on the NAS, it's always on-line!

Our operation here is so erratic, it would be pointless to schedule the NAS go on at a certain time and off at another. I would much rather the NAS WOL when one of 2 PCs are switched on. But unfortunately my model DS411j does not support WOL.

I was never a huge fan of secondcopy. That said, its been around a while and some like it. If you are looking for alternatives to test try:

http://www.kls-soft.com/klsbackup/index.php

http://www.2brightsparks.com/syncback/compare.html

KLS Backup will run as a service and includes settings to handle network speed limits, network retires, wait, etc. on LAN connection errors.

Or if you are looking for freeware that is good (but lacks any auto restore options) look at http://www.cobiansoft.com/cobianbackup.htm

I've seen File Name Too Long in windows with a variety of software. It's usually due to either:
a) destination is FAT, not NTFS and source has really long names
b) destination path is a bit long, and that path length + length of some source files' exceeds 256 chars (as I recall). Normally, one can use a shorter destination path, or map a drive letter, as a work-around. Or find the few offending files and rename them.

As to Second Copy... I tried several and found it the easiest to use and several years' use on Windows and with NAS says it is stable and reliable.
Synology's Data Replicator is OK for very simple use cases, but it's only about 20% of what SecondCopy can do.

I am using secondcopy without any hassles. It didn't mind the long file names. So for now I will stick to it
