New Around Here
Guys,

I'm about to take the plunge and get a 4 disk NAS to replace my 2 disk Icybox NAS. I want it to stream movies and music around the house (3 streamers on the network right now, but only two simultaneous reads likely). I also want good download manager (emule & torrent occasionally and NZBs more often). Online RAID expansion also very desirable as I have 4 500gb disks in hand but will look to upgrade to 1tb and eventually 2tb as budget allows.

Nice to haves include Jumbo frames support and Network camera recording as I have a couple). Also, ability to tweak / upgrade (RAM for example) would be nice as I like to play with these things.

I was all set on the QNAP TS409 but I've noticed the new Synology DS409 seems to meet the requirement and can be had for the same price (£345-£350 delivered).

Can someone please clarify if the Synology is better than the QNAP for my needs as despite all the reading I cant seem to work it out.

Many thanks,

Xav

Just a notice on the CPU/platform of two products. DS409 use the newer chipset Marvell/6281 1.2GHz/256MB RAM while TS409 used older Marvel/5281 500MHz/128MB RAM.

The emule and nzb download clients are integrated within Synology DS409.

You cannot upgrade the RAM in both models.

Thanks! I was doing further reading on the applications for each yesterday and was moving towards the Synolgy. Your confirmation re the chipset and installed RAM has clinched it.

Will get an order in this weekend :D
