I dont see any of those added features in Software from these two companies being any use to me. So Pure Read / Write Speed and Quality of Hardware is more important.

In terms of the DS 209 and TS 210 Series.
Which one has better design in Hardware.

It seems to me Synology like using plastic and Qnap uses Metal cases. Is this still true for the newer Qnap model? Using metal cases?

And if any other things i should consider?

If the NAS is going to be moved around a lot, then by all means go for the extra robustness of all metal, but if not, I would not see any difference in a static unit being metal or plastic (after all it is only going to sit on a shelf)

Some people may indicate that all metal gives superior cooling properties over plastic, but only if the metal case is designed to be part of the internal heatsink

If the metal case does not come in contact with any internal heatsink, it will not provide any extra cooling

Plastic can tend to dampen out noise slightly better than metal, but only if it is designed to to that

Plastic cases can be moulded to give a smoother overall look, where as all metal cases tend to be more angular box shapes

As you mentioned Synology, there main chassis is normally made of metal, but the cover can be made of plastic, but not in all cases
The higher end models are almost all metal with possibly plastic for the front face to make them more aesthetically pleasing

If looking for a 2 bay NAS from either Synology or Qnap you have the following options in order from slowest to fastest

Synology
210j with 800Mhz CPU and 128MB RAM
209 with 1.2Ghz CPU and 256MB RAM
211 with 1.6Ghz CPU and 256MB RAM (due out shortly as a replacement for the 209)
210+ with 1.06Ghz CPU and 512MB RAM
211+ I have no specs on this a it has not been released as yet, but expect it to be same as 210+ but with a faster CPU
710+ with 1.6Ghz single core CPU and 1GB RAM

QNAP
210 with 800Mhz CPU and 256MB RAM
219P with 1.2Ghz CPU and 512MB RAM
239Pro with 1.6Ghz single core CPU and 1GB RAM
259Pro with 1.6Ghz dual core CPU and 1GB RAM
259Pro+ with 1.8Ghz dual core CPU and 1GB RAM

The cpu mhz are pretty meaningless when comparing between different processor families and architectures.
