I get this when I reboot the router, but not when I restart the VPN only. Does this affect anything?
The VPN will show "connected" after it is turned off.
I have to switch off/on the VPN several times a day and restart the router as well as the connection slows down to nothing.

Running the latest asuwrt-merlin on ac-rt87u, is this normal?

That's a normal startup message.
It's due to the fact that the router has not RTC (Real Time Clock) in hardware - which would need a battery to continue running during reboots and/or power off periods.
