TM-AC1900 Question

Please forgive me but after searching the forums I couldn't find the exact information I was seeking, so here's my question:

Am I likely to incur any problems if I get one of these and am NOT a T-Mobile subscriber. And yes, I realize they've modified it for their WiFi calling but from what I have found, it's still identical to the RT-AC87U, which from what I have read is a fast, reliable 3 band router. I don't have tons of wireless devices, and have been using an old Netgear N300 series which has been dependable.

These seem to be very affordable on the open market when you can find one, so I'm curious if they ARE reliable, what's the best firmware and where anyone could direct a noob with Asus AC routers were I to get one. It seems MOST people on this forum are VERY skilled and knowledgeable, so please remember I'm not at the level most of the 'geeks' here are. Thanks.

Seriously complex for someone like me.. Are you saying that you can't just install a Merlin version instead of all this? Thanks.

Thanks.. after doing lots of research and observing issues with reverting this model back to the standard AC68U, I decided against it and bought a brand new RT- AC56U at a GREAT price ($55)
