Unable to change "wireless mode"

^Tripper^

Senior Member
Have a strange one. Am unable to change the "wireless mode" setting on any of my radios, am given only the "Auto" option.

Am using the BE98, running Gnutron's 3006.102.3 beta firmware.

Just checking if this is expected behavior or a bug in the firmware, or most likely, me just missing something obvious.

Thank you!

Do you have "Smart Connect" (Wireless - General) enabled? If so that will probably be the reason.

Check in the Network section on the left side menu - a lot of wireless settings were moved there.

When you initially flashed the Gnuton 3006.102.3 beta from stock Asus firmware did you perform a hard factory reset? Did you also load a saved router.CFG file after flashing the Gnuton firmware? If so, as a troubleshooting step you may want to perform a hard factory reset then a manual configuration without importing a saved configuration file. Also note the Gnuton change log instruction:
NOTE: To flash a router with higher firmware please disable the check by runing nvram set DOWNGRADE_CHECK_PASS=1

Yup, did a hard factory reset and set it up fresh, no backup CFG file used. I also did note the change log and instructions.

So seems like this is not expected behavior and something seems to have gone wonky somewhere.

Been having some strange issues with all my apple devices recentlytoo, thou I suspect that had something to do with the apple updates rather than the router. I think a fresh reset/install may be in order. I'll try it later today and update this thread with results.

Thank you all!

So did a reset and things seemed ok. Did a reboot and problem reappeared (can't change wireless mode and smart connect option is missing). Did another reset, reinstall the firmware, reset again. Things look normal. Reboot and problem happens again.

Something is seriously weird here.

So I've been trying to troubleshoot. The wireless modes do not work. But something interesting I've found; If I try disabling a radio, the GUI shows "changing setting" but the change DOES NOT take effect; the radio remains on. Its almost as if the "professional tab" does not affect any changes.

@GNUton Tagging you for awareness.

Another interesting thing I've noticed since resetting the router; CPU core 4 is pegged to 100%...

I'm gonna have a beer now... and might just douse the router with it.

As a troubleshooting step, try (if you haven't already) doing a hard factory reset, then flashing stock Asus firmware, then another hard factory reset. Then see if the setting(s) are available and can be changed in the stock Asus firmware.

Was thinking the exact same thing, will help narrow down if it's specific to Gnuton's fork or just the 98 being a.... something.

Will try it tomorrow, wife is back home and I'd rather have a working dodgy network now then to get chewed out by her if the interwebs is down.

So I reinstalled the stock latest firmware; GT-BE98 : 3.0.0.6.102_36878-g4285a33_928-gb0408_BB0B.... and what a shirt show...

All the issues is described earlier persist. "wireless- professional- mode" options are missing. "General- smart connect" is missing. All this despite doing hard resets, reboots, naked dancing with black cats under the moonlight... Nothing works.

I now have also lost the option to upload a firmware manually!!! So am stuck with this eye bleeding GUI and unable to use my fav scripts. GRRRR...

I saw some log entires that's making me thing its hardware related at this point; s"Serdes 8" errors? (screenshot below);

So am gonna call Asus tomorrow and see what they say. Thankfully this facehugger is still under warranty and I expect Asus to sort me out.

Will update.

Good lord, this router has been more drama than Netflix.

So spoke to asus. Besides the issues described here, I also shared other issues I have been facing and steps taken to troubleshoot etc.

They also suspect a hardware fault. Credit to asus, they immediately offered a one to one exchange.

So got that done. New unit plugged in. Been running stock firmware and most issues resolved though the original point of the thread (missing wireless options) persists.

Nvm, loaded gnuton’s firmware. System seems A LOT MORE SOLID, most issues resolved except for the wireless options thing and a few minor things. But changes to basic wireless setting finally stick.

Am thinking the minor issues I’m facing now are beta related. Will monitor and report to gnuton.

Thank you all for the assist.

Unfortunately don’t think it’s beta related I have the GT-BE98 Pro on the Latest stock firmware and I myself am having the same issue, basically unable to change anything related to that setting only option I have is Auto. I’ve done many factory resets and setup router with default settings to no avail. So in conclusion it’s definitely a asus issue.

Thanks for confirming. Narrows it down for sure. :)
