So, i had a CyberPower UPS give up the ghost recently. was making some horrible noises when it died. It ran for 3+ years, initially powering a very hungry old pentium3 router. When it would transition to the battery, it caused the harddrives to stop spinning until the machine rebooted, so i'm a little leary about going with another cyberpower, but only a little. every other (low power) device i used on it after didn't present any weirdness. When I used it, I could run 1x phone in, 2x phone out and the splitter seemed to be of much greater quality than typical rj11 splitters.

So, i'm in the market for a new UPS and that is pretty much at the top of the list of my priorities, 1x phone in, 2x phone out and preferably less than say, $120.

pretty much all i've found was more or less the exact same model i had been using. i was hoping for a bit newer technology than that. wtf UPS manufacturers? if i can't find something a little niftier, i suppose i'll just grab that same cheapo $40 UPS and call it a day

I too hate having to replace anything with the same anything! :)

Even if it is the best there is available.

yea, i'm thinking about looking for something like an overpriced faceplate with surge protection and multiple outlets and snagging an APC UPS. surely such a faceplate must exist, but it's dumb that i can't accomplish this with a much nicer UPS than the ol' cyberpower UPS i had.

at least this way i can do what i originally set out to do, which was find a cool UPS with a similar size form factor as the rest of my central network equipment so i could figure out a cool mini rack type of thing to encase it all in at the center of my apartment

I almost always opt for APC. But the latest 1500VA unit is a way too loud during charge & AVR stabilization phases.

I like my Trip Lite units. The display show you how many watts the equipment plugged in is drawing and also give you an estimate of how many minutes of standby you will get.

More importantly they give you an easy way to turn off the alarm for when the power goes off. Nothing pisses off the wife more that the beeping UPS at 3 AM.

i've always heard great things about apc, but i think you've sold me on a tripplite. out of curiousity, can the display be shut off for when it's running on battery? i'm mildly concerned that the devices connected likely wouldnt use much more power, each, than the lcd display itself. if it were led, i'd not be as concerned. however, memories of the wretched alarm on the cyberpower is enough for me to look past that. i'd love to see the power draw of the connected devices; i don't have anything like a kill-a-watt, which is kinda silly considering the industry were all in

I bought CyberPower 1500 because it was so much less expensive that Cadillac APC.

The one I have has a blue LCD display that displays lots, including
AC line voltage, freq.
Watts of load, real time.
Battery charge condition and estimated run time for current watts of load
and some other info.
From the PC, there is lots more, e.g., time of last power glitch/failure, force-test power failure, etc.

The LCD display goes off after a few seconds of non-use.

hmm, so after looking, i really liked the form factor of this tripplite unit in particular; https://encrypted-tbn3.gstatic.com/...0G4sW_MdljjKOqs_jc2GgncR5C0IPjKr5UoJ&usqp=CAY

but after checking out stevech's UPS (900w for ~150usd + the features stevech mentioned is pretty slick), i found these models to be more recently designed and am now curious to see if the 'pure sine wave' tech is as cool as they claim; http://www.cyberpowersystems.com/products/ups-systems/pfc-sinewave-series/CP850PFCLCD.html

510w/850va for around the same price as stevech's 900w/1500va. this is only going to be used for the networking equipment, though; modem, dedicated router, dedicated AP, just enough for the laptops and phones. I guess i am transitioning away from desktops, so i don't think i'll ever need such a high capacity UPS, now. a new Lenovo Y410p (14", i7, 8gb, 1tb hdd, nV 755m, 1600x900LED) joined the family this last christmas and now i want another.

thanks all. if you think of something else, let me know.
