USB Drive on AC56U (Auto Download/Access/Backup Q's)

hello new merlin user here...i'm on the latest build and need tips/help for the AC56U

1. What's the best way to setup auto-download of torrents via RSS feed? Preferrably something that supports magnet links. It seems Transmission is popular but I'm not sure if it supports autodownload? Does Optware still not see frequent updates/support?

2. SOLVED This might seem like a silly question but how do I just access the files USB drive directly from my computer? Let's say I wanna move files from my computer to the USB drive. Digging around the admin page I can only create/rename new folders...all the FAQ/Guide on official ASUS pages only shows me how to access files from the media server.

3. Is there a way to stick another HDD to the USB2 port and mirror/backup automatically the contents on USB3? Essentially RAID 1 to prevent data loss

4. Unrelated general question on Merlin: when saving the setting changes often times it reboots the router? It doesn't really happen to the stock AsusWRT unless im changing QoS bandwidth or upgrading firmware. Any way around that? I have lots of clients connected and even seeing downtime every time I fiddle with settings can be disruptive.

Thanks

1. CouchPotato is an option to assign jobs to a torrent client.
2. Samba is your best option, in USB App../Servers Center.
3. You can setup a cron job that starts a shell script to copy files
4. Some settings require a reboot to take effect. Merlin knows why...

hi thanks for your response.

My main private torrent trackers (HD-T and IP-T) do not support either couchpotato/torrentpotato clients.

I have absolutely no programming experience, I cannot find any info on the web regarding backup cron scripts on asuswrt-merlin. If you can guide me in the right direction that'd be nice.

Can you elaborate more on samba? I can only change R/W etc permissions but not actually view/access the contents within the folder. All Samba/NFS Export/FTP settings are default

Haha I like that. Welcome to the UNIX/Linux world!
Samba allows Windows clients to access the Linux file system.

r/w stands for read/write rights to files and folders. Basically this is your view/access to the files.
Click on 'Enable share' and allow the admin account full access (r/w) to the files you want to share. Do not allow Guest login.
Then open your File Explorer (presuming you're on Windows) and open Network Places.
Your shares will show up and it will ask for the routers admin/password.
Do this first and we'll try to guide you along the rest of your "bucket list".

thanks...didn't think to check my file explorer. Yeah I knew what R/W meant I just thought i could access the files directly in the admin page/GUI

I don't have time to look into setting up the other stuff right now. i'll bump this thread again when I'm ready to take the plunge into learning a bit of linux code :) Don't mind additional input from others in the meantime regarding clients that support torrent autodownloads.
