USB Modem Connection seems to be broken in 374.41

Seems that Asus has broken the USB modem connection in their new build that is the base for Merlin's 374.41

My Huawei E372 is not any longer able to connect anyway, syslog shows troubles with the connection string:

Code:
Jan 1 01:00:32 pppd[909]: Connect script failed
...
Jan 1 01:01:37 pppd[1225]: In file /tmp/ppp/peers/3g: unrecognized option '/dev/'

The same problem comes up when trying to flash the new Asus firmware (374.5517).

When changing the modem (e.g. to ZTE MF652) the modem gets connected, but after 24 hours (if WAN goes down, as my ISP cuts the 3G/4G connection all 24 hours) it refuses to re-connect, and I have to restart the router to be able to connect again.

This is really a pity for me as 3G/4G connections are the only possibility to go to Internet in my region.

When flashing back to 374.40 everything is working again as it should...

From my former experiences with Asus I doubt strongly that they will deal with that issue as there are just far too few persons involved...

Asus has been doing some work on USB 3G/4G support in 5047, adding support for a new class of devices from what I could gather. The connection script has been further changed in 5517, so I suspect this is currently a work-in-progress on their end.

Is there any workaround you could suggest so that I would be able to use build 374.41? The connection scripts are placed in a non-writeable area on the router so I'm not able to replace the new scripts with the scripts that are working sufficiently in build 374.40...

Hi,

Thanks again RMerlin for all your hard work, I've been using your fw's with my rt-66ac as long as I've had Asus router, like a year :D And been very satisfied with it.

I've also just gotten 3G modem (Huawei e3276 working in 3G mode). I have to second that with the newset fw the modem does not work. There is the same network script error in syslog so I rolled back to .40 and it's working okay with that. The problem is the same with the official asus fw's.

This issue also applies to using Android phones as a 3g/4g modem. I need a router where my only internet option is 3g/4g. I upgraded to the latest ASUS firmware and could not get a Samsung Note 3 or Google Nexus 5 (the Note running Android 4.4.2, and the Nexus running the latest available for it) to connect to AT&T. My RT-N66R recognized both as a USB modem, but would not connect to AT&T through either . I spent many hours trying different USB modem setting to no avail.

I tried 374.43 and it did not work either. Downgraded to 374.40 and both connect just fine. With all of the security updates in the latest firmware I would like to use that, but I need to have the USB modem connection working. Hopefully the USB modem connection strings (or what ever is causing the problem) will get fixed at least to the level of functionality in 374.40 and the ASUS firmware equivalent. Being compatible again with the latest Android phones would be a good thing.

Just in case someone comes across this post that is having issues getting android to connect, my USB modem settings (that work in 374.40) are:

Location: Manual
USB Modem: WCDMA (UMTS)
USB Adapter: Auto
Everything else was blank.

I don't know if these are the only settings that work with 374.40. With the newest firmware (which does not work) I tried a lot of different setting including USA location and the ATT specific drop down setting, and nothing worked. These were what I had when I flashed to 374.40 and since it worked, I did not mess with it any more.
