In order to make a USB scanner available on a home network, has anyone successfully done this using the USB port on their router, with either stock or Merlin firmware? If yes, are the instructions for doing that available somewhere?

Maybe try (if you haven't already) using the USB Network Print Server option in the Asus router GUI > USB Application > Network Print Server. (edit: LPR might be for printing only though based on some searching of past posts on SNBForums.)

Edit: There is the following from the Asus-Merlin Wiki, it may or may not work with Asus-Merlin firmware.

The following Asus video implies (starting at the 1 minute 8 second mark) that you can scan in addition to print when using the Asus EZ Print Sharing Utility.

Is the scanner application software and device driver network-aware? ASUS may glue together network printing with some utility on the router, but I'm doubful about scanning from the router. I would share the scanner locally or use a scanner that can connect directly to the network.
