Usenet downloads, speed test, and gaming pings

Adaptive QoS running FreshJR's Fast script

My QoS is categorizing everything correctly, but I'm trying to figure out some weird interactions.

When I am playing Rocket League on PS4, doing a speed test will not affect my ping, even though it seems to be almost saturating my bandwidth. (Example test: www.speedtest.net/result/7361723411). At most, I saw a 4ms increase in my ping in-game (from 24ms to 28ms), with no discernible change in play.

However, when I download anything from usenet (using NZBGet), my ping will increase 12-40ms, regardless of how much bandwidth NZBGet is using. I reduced the number of connections allowed all the way down to 1. This limited the total bandwidth NZBGet was using to 3-4MB/s, about 1/3 of my capacity. My in-game ping still went up! All the download traffic was appropriately categorized as File Transfer, and my gaming activity was properly categorized as well.

What is happening here?

I saw some improvement after following the instructions found here: https://www.bufferbloat.net/projects/bloat/wiki/Windows_Tips/ (I have a Windows 8.1 machine serving as a media server, where NZBGet runs).

Specifically, I did this:

Code:
netsh int tcp set global ecn=enable

After running that, I am only seeing a 10-16ms increase in gaming ping even when NZBGet is downloading at 80% of total capacity.

Have you set the per packet overhead value?
And also set you qos priorities similar to the the customers ones fresh posted see if that helps but if you need more help just ping me amigo.

Yes, I set it to the cable modem setting. It's not a huge problem, I mostly just want to figure out why it does this. No other kind of traffic on my network affects ping like this.

Usenet without custom filtering rules has been found to get identified as VoIP.

VoIP has priority over gaming per default configs.

You need to redirected Usenet lower.

Edit: reread your first post. Seems like it wasn’t a catagory issue.

What is your dslreports bufferbloat score? Dslreports is a better site than speedtest.

Edit2: nice find on enabling ECN.
