I use an always connected VPN from NordVPN.
I have several PCs here, all of which are always connected to the VPN.
I use OpenVPN client software. I do not use the NordVPN app.
The DNS servers are configured in my ASUS RT-AC88u (running latest Merlin firmare), on the WAN page. All NIC configurations point to the router for IP address and DNS.
To resolve DNS leaks, apparently a known issue on Windows 10, I was advised to use block-outside-dns in my .ovpn files.
I used to run a Win2012 R2 Windows server, back in the days before Technet was shut down, but I could not afford to pay the price for a later server OS, so my PCs are now all Windows 10
When I was running Windows 2012 R2 using block-outside-dns killed the connection to the server for applications that use MySQL, ColdFuision, IIS, and file sharing.
Since switching to Windows 10 block-outside-dns no longer kills access from client PCs to the "server" and the services running on it.
However, connections are extremely slow.
Without block-outside-dns I have DNS leaks. But everything on the LAN opened almost instantly.
With it, opening the internal home page or any of my inhouse application pages take up to 10 seconds to load. MySQL Workbench will take up to 30 seconds to open a database
I don't know nearly enough about the technical aspects of this subject to even know where to begin looking, or what information to share here to help others provide guidance.
I would appreciate some guidance on speeding up things here, and advice as to what information I can provide to assist.
thank you.
