I am seeking general NAS vendor advice.

I have notice many NAS distributors don't have stock on-hand and these devices must be ordered. I am concerned if I need to make a return for a defective unit I will have to pay return shipping and possibly a restocking fee (15-20%) if I am out of their 'return window' (15-30 days). After 30 days I am likely stuck dealing with a manufacturer based in Asia.

I like mail order, but these devices are a bit expensive to deal with the hassle of vendor policies.
Please advise, share experiences.
Thanks,
Z

In general, you're going to need to deal with the vendor for product returns and support.
What companies are you looking at? Thecus, Synology and QNAP all have U.S. offices that can handle returns and service.
