I have an N66U currently. Been waiting a long time for this router to come out.
I want to revamp my whole home network, which thanks to ASUS means a new router, and hard drive and voila!
Now, with my N66U the asus built-in downloader was only able to SAVE files on a USB attached drive. Is that STILL the case with the 87?
I seen some really nice MyCloud hard drives that have USB ports on them, but it SEEMS like they are for attaching external USB devices to the drive, and NOT for attaching the hard drive to a host (PC or in this case, asus router)
My reason for this is I use a VPN service (Built-in client to PIA) and I can never access the attached hard drive remotely when VPN tunnel is up.
I assume a separate MyCloud type hard drive will work if I turn it on AFTER the router is up and running. But I need to be able to download using the built-in downloader onto that same USB 3.0 hard drive. Last time I checked, it was USB attached only, and NOT possible via CIFS share.
Same goes with DLNA, Most mycloud har drives have built-in DLNA, for different codecs / DLNA servers react differently with my Toshiba TV.
So far, ASUS router works best with my TV, so I was hoping I can use the built-in DLNA server on the router to scan and share my content on the hard drive.
I got 2 options:
Find a USB 3.0 mycloud hard drive that works well connected to the AC-87,
OR
Have ASUS Router be able to download to a CIFS share, and scan a CIFS share for supplying DLNA content.
OK, maybe not so quick of a question.
Still, can someone attach a screen capture of the comfig page for SAVE TO for the downloader? Same for DLNA "Share this location over DLNA" setting.
Nish
