My ASUS RT-AC68U router (with FW: 374.39 Merlin build installed )has a VPN client connection to a US based VPN server for the purpose of providing TV such as Netflix, A&E, History, etc. When the connection is active the download (mostly) and the upload (sometimes) speeds are reduced by 25% - 37%. I have 80/8 Mbps internet connection which, with the VPN client connection, is reduced, at worst, 50/6 Mbps. For the purpose of watching videos or TV shows, I can live with this reduction of speeds however others share this connection. Keeping the VPN connection active all the time means everyone, regardless of what they may be doing, will only get 663-75% of the speeds they should be getting most of the time. One obvious solution is to disconnect the VPN client when not being used but this means I have to be around all the time when someone besides myself needs to access US TV or wants it disconnected to take advantage of the maximum speed the ISP provided us.The obvious is not a viable one so......
Is this a possible job for a vlan solution? Could I create a second vlan, setup my VPN client on this vlan and connect my rokus into this vlan?? Any one else would remain on vlan1 and theoretically not impacted by the speed loss of the VPN client. One immediate problem pops up. While this may work for anyone who uses a roku to watch these stations, other on vlan1 may wish to watch these stations at times directly from their PC's How can this be achieved? Possibly a VPN server on the 2nd vlan???
