VPN Client setup on rt-n66u merlin

New Around Here
I've been working on my setup for about a week, but since this is all new to me, I'm having a real hard time. Any help would be much appreciated. Here's what I've got:

- Nexus 5 usb tethered to the rt-n66u as the internet source
- rt-n66u with 3.0.0.4.374.39 merlin firmware
- private internet access (PIA) as my VPN service
- the latest instructions I followed for setting up the VPN client are here:
https://www.privateinternetaccess.c...tup-for-newer-branches-including-tomatousb/p1

Everything seems to be going well (almost). The VPN is running on the VPN Status page, but I get stuck at these six lines in the log, as the connection is retried over and over:

openvpn[942]: TLS Error: TLS key negotiation failed to occur within 60 seconds (check your network connectivity)
openvpn[942]: TLS Error: TLS handshake failed
openvpn[942]: SIGUSR1[soft,tls-error] received, process restarting
openvpn[942]: NOTE: the current --script-security setting may allow this configuration to call user-defined scripts
openvpn[942]: UDPv4 link local: [undef]
openvpn[942]: UDPv4 link remote: [AF_INET]50.23.65.34:1194

I'm not sure what I'm missing... would the problem have something to do with the fact that I'm using my phone as a modem? How would I remedy that? What other information is needed to help diagnose my issue?

Thanks!

Hmmm... thanks for that link.

I checked it out, and the firewall on my Mac mini is disabled, and so is the firewall on the router. I don't believe it is even possible to configure the private internet access VPN server, so I wouldn't think that would be the problem.

I have read something about iptables on my Android device. Would that act somewhat like a firewall and cause problems?
