VPN pass through DSL AC68U

pdes

Occasional Visitor
The DSL-AC68U is rock solid on a long line VDSL (Sky). My wife logs into her company with a VPN however, her MS Outlook is dropping frequently - perhaps every 20 minutes or so. All other connections from other PCs do not suffer any kind of disconnects and the router doesn't show issues in the error log.

Is there a reason why this should happen with this router? We haven't had the issue with previous routers - come to think of it, it could have started when we switched to VDSL.

Is there a setting somewhere that can fix this?

Thanks

David

the issue could be with the company's server/network. Check for link disconnects on your router. Some applications can withstand a second or 2 without connection before it stops whereas some use frequent updates. If you use PPP to connect to your ISP than look for PPPOA/PPPOE link changes.

Thanks for this. The connection is PPPoA (Sky UK). The error log for this morning shows:

09:59:57 ntp: start NTP update
Aug 7 10:09:17 miniupnpd[734]: upnp_event_recv: recv(): Connection reset by peer
Aug 7 10:31:28 dnsmasq-dhcp[484]: Ignoring domain eur.nsroot.net for DHCP host name LDNGSDNA279484
Aug 7 10:59:57 ntp: start NTP update
Aug 7 11:59:57 ntp: start NTP update
Aug 7 12:24:22 miniupnpd[734]: upnp_event_recv: recv(): Connection reset by peer
Aug 7 12:59:59 ntp: start NTP update
Aug 7 13:38:19 miniupnpd[734]: upnp_event_recv: recv(): Connection reset by peer

None of these events correlate to the drops (but I have no idea what they mean!)

Cheers

David

Does this log correspond with the time of drops experienced? Try using it one day and one day without and see if this error appears. All this error says is that the connection was dropped by the server and the issue with NAT and upnp is that you cannot do a remote connection reset.

No, the resets did not coinside with the drops,

if there are no other logs than the problem isnt on your end. It could be a configuration problem with MS outlook (such as timeouts, slow computer) or it could be on the company end (server problems, network problems). The fact that you can connect shows VPN passthrough working.

Ok, thanks for that. I'll get her to raise a ticket with her company.

Cheers

I would look for MTU issues. Outlook is notorious to use large packets way too often. Maybe your DSL connection is not offering the exact MTU Asus has configured and that may cause the exact issues you are talking about.
My 2c.

I may be wrong but I don't think that I can change the MTU when on VDSL. If it's possible, where is the setting? I can't find it :-(

In your WAN settings on connecting to your ISP.

I must be having a senior moment! I have changed MTU values many times before on this router but only on ADSL. I have never looked for it on VDSL and I STILL can't find it in the WAN section.

Am I going do-lally or has it been removed from VDSL mode?

Cheers

MTU adjusting is only available on PPPoE connections.

I think RMerlin is referring to VDSL connections, VDSL does not use PPPoA as far as I am aware but it is the standard for ADSL in the UK whereas VDSL is PPPoE. Don't sky use something different again though?
