VPN Server - redirect client to PIA (router is VPN client)

Jack Yaz

Hi there,

I'm running an OpenVPN server on my Asus, and I also have a VPN client with policy routing to PIA.

Is it possible for me to redirect specific clients connecting to my OpenVPN server, and have their WAN traffic go via the PIA VPN client?

Reason for this is so that I can allow access to some resources on my LAN, but have WAN traffic go to PIA.

I did try adding the IP for the connected VPN client to the PIA policy routing, and specified "redirect internet traffic", but it didn't work (resulted in no WAN connectivity at all)

I'm presuming it will be via a client-connect script for the OpenVPN server to supply some routes/configure something on the Asus, but not a foggy where to start!

Thanks in advance!

The only settings that come to mind at the moment are Push LAN to Clients and Direct Clients to redirect internet traffic on the OpenVPN Server side. From yorgi's guide:

Push LAN to clients: allows you to access your network via the tunnel,
such as remote desktop, file sharing and print sharing.

Direct clients to redirect internet traffic: If this feature is enabled all traffic will go via the router.

For the first experiment, try setting all traffic to go thru the vpn tunnel and see what happens to the clients when they connect to the server.

If you use policy rules, things may get more complicated. I did some research back in January and learned how to assign static ip to vpn clients connecting to a router via vpn server. But I ended up not needing it and not sure what I did with my notes. I'll look for it later. It was DD-WRT firmware. But it should apply to other firmwares that support OpenVPN.
