Wan Connection drops Asus N66u -AC66u

Ale

New Around Here
Hi everyone!
recently i moved to a new location and I started having connection drops.
I though it may be software related so now I´m using the latest Merlin, but the drops persist.
Did a factory reset after upgrading and a manual setup to the router.

I´m under PPOE over an optical fiber and the connection renews every 12hs (no fixed Ip in my country unless you´re an Enterprise)
the drops occur between those 12 hours, they´re very random (after 86, 230, 350, 20, 8, minutes ) i don't see any pattern on them.
The N66u has been rock solid for the past 5 years i never had an issue before moving.
Now I´m using a brand new AC66u (i thought as the other router is old maybe it starting to fail), but i have the same issues with the new router.
All my connection are wired
I´ve tested cat5e cat6 and 6a shielded wires with the same result ( drops persist)
it doesn't seem to be a wire issue.**

I have an ONT provided by the isp set up in bridge mode so the router handles everything.
if I connect directly to the ONT (ONT--PC) and dial up the connection I don´t have any connection drops only the ( every ) 12hs renewal. ( **reason why i have discarded the wire as a problem )
If I connect the ONT to the router and the pc to the router (ONT---ROUTER--PC ) i have random drops.
It seems to be some issue between the ONT-router communication.
But i don´t have a clue what it could be.
I´m a super noob in networking so any suggestion may help.

I´m attaching 2 logs one from the ONT the other from the router.

Appreciate any help!

Many Thanks!

i have exactly the same problem with my N66 on PPPoE. i find that items like Apple itunes updates dont download, XBox ONE system upgrades either, i have to turn off the N66 and reconfigure my Huawei Modem and then download everything again. Could it be some bug on PPPoE setting....? any advice also welcome, this is bugging me for sometime too.

Are you sure this is with PPPoE? It sounds like a UPNP or NAT problem. If the problem was with PPPoE your internet would stop or it would hang.

If PPPoE connects fine than the problem isnt PPPoE even if it changes every 12 hours, rather connections that are already opened or tables may still be using the old values.

Thanks for the feedback, should i try to disable upnp, its a very strange problem. it only seems to be a problem with large downloads, games, apple etc. regular access to internet pages/email/youtube seems to work fine. i had the same problem when using the Asus firmware, i thought that by moving to Merlin, it might solve it, but it hasn't. Any other info that i can provide that might help?

disabling upnp will cause you problems with consoles, games and some applications. Rather you need to use a different firmware or try RMerlin's firmware. If you can disable hardware acceleration and make it use software processing if the problem isnt firwamare.

Another thing you would need to do is not to set a minimum time for table entries and DNS entries. Make sure the default time is also set low. If you use RMerlins firmware and start modifying files with ssh you could change this.

Sorry if i wasn't clear, i'm already using Merlins firmware, i changed from ASus firmware hoping that that might resolve the issue, but it didn't.
not sure how i turn off the HW acceleration, but if you let me know i can try that.

Also i don't see any option on Merlin's firmware to adjust the DNS time, i'm currently set to automatic (ie.ISPs DNS servers)
heres a snapshot of the settings

Thanks for the replies!
i was kind of busy and didn´t had the time to check the forum.

The problem is fixed !
i seems it was indeed a software problem and i have no more issues after change back to the official latest asus ( 3.0.0.4.378_9313) firmware.

I also i have been reading a lot, about the possible cause of the problem.

Dec 12 16:23:00 pppd[2813]: No response to 10 echo-requests
Dec 12 16:23:00 pppd[2813]: Serial link appears to be disconnected.

this is mostly likely due failing to get the PPP echos correctly and then dropping the connection.

A script modifying the LCP failure count and interval could solve this.
Since i don´t know how to do it myself is good that this is ""maybe"" somehow fixed in the latest asus firmware.

I´m wandering thought how long is the default LCP response time in Merlin´s firmware that was still having the issue with the latest version for the N66U.

anyways as i was saying before i don't know much of networking maybe it was a completely different issue. but now is fixed with a firmware change.
And I'm finally really happy! :)

Thanks !

DNS expiry, not DNS time. Try changing the firmware first before fiddling with other things.

Hi, I'm not sure what you mean when you say change the firmware? Change it to what? I'm already running the latest Merlin firmware........?

i havent found a version of firmware from either Asus or Merlin that solves the problem, so i dont know what to revert to

Hi

I have the same router and problem, cept i would lose connection every 4 to 6 hour and sometimes instantly, like say in the morning when people get up and start using the internet. I have tried both stock and merlin firmware both having the same problems. I have boiled it down to the router can not handle my connection speed 100/20 on fiber. It used to worked great on 30/10 fiber as well. However i started to having the problem when i upgraded my connection speed with my isp. son now i only use my rt-ac66u as a access point. It was a good thing a had a different router sitting on the shelf for a quick replacement a draytek Vigor 2103 and and was doing wonderfully until 2 days ago now i only get a 50/20 connection that will do until i can build my own router.

Heres an example of whats happening with mine........
