I recently bought a WD MyBookWorld Edition II and have it connected to a gigabit switch (GS608). I also have a workstation (P5K-e motherboard, 6gb 1066 RAM, gigabit ethernet, e8400 3.0GHz processor) that is connected through the same switch. I am currently using the Windows 7 RC. When copying files to the MBWE II, I only get about 10-14MB/s speed copying a series of 20MB files. I guess I was expecting to get somewhere closer to 30MB/s based on the review. Can someone help me figure out what is going on?

Nothing is wrong. The File Copy charts show 13.5 MB/s for RAID 0, 14.5 MB/s for RAID 1.

Different test methods yield different results.

What's the Downloader for?

I'd like to ask if anyone knows what the downloader is for in the system settings?
When trying to sign into the NAS's settings, it gives you 3 tools to choose from, "Network Storage Manager, Downloader, & Copy Manager." What is the Downloader for and how is it used?

I only have two shares/accounts on my NAS, yet when I try to log on with any of those two (including admin) I get an error saying, the username and password do not match. Is there some special username and password for the Downloader?

And also, what are benefits of such things as downloading web pages or FTP files onto it? Couldn't it be modified to download torrents as well?

There could be. Check the documentation.

I don't think it can be modified to download Torrents, which is what most people want to do.

I bought a refurbished item and it did not come with documentation. I dont care too much about it though, so it is okay. But as for things like FTP/HTTP (remote) access, I have been trying to get that to work with no luck. Every time I try to use the MIONET service, the page does not load within the browser after I am logged in and I try to access the drive. And I have not one clue as to how to access through FTP or HTTP? (I know how to use FTP to edit a website and etc. but not access a NAS)

You mention that the USB port can be used to back up the NAS. I have a WD My Book World Edition II which I had to replace recently. It required backing up, but unless there's a trick it's not obvious how that would be done. If you connect a hard drive to the USB port you can transfer items in the public area to it using the copy app that you select when you log into the unit, but there doesn't seem to be any other way to get at things ( basically I had to transfer the items to my Mac and then back to the new unit, but I was never able to recover my time machine backups as there was no obvious way to access them). I could have ssh'd into the device and done it that way but it wasn't critical. I like the unit, the warranty is great, price is excellent but there are still some lingering doubts for me at least... I also have 2 Drobos and feel quite a bit safer with them ( even though I have the same WD drives in the Drobos :) ).

If you log in as the ADMINISTRATOR, when try to use the copy manager you can access every file share (public or private). You also didnt need to transfer the files to your MAC and then to your new drive. I recently got a newer one myself, and all I did was hook them both up (set up the new drive with all the shares and etc) and used an external hard drive to transfer them from one NAS to the other directly to exactly the right file share. I then changed the DCPH of the new drive on my router to the same as the older, and everything works the same. My torrents that werent finished continued to download, my itunes/zune library have no problems with my precious library (i didnt have to add the files again).

I'm sorry but I am a little confused.

Can the WD My Book World II (newest version) do a backup from itself (NAS) to another NAS and/or a USB drive? If it can, is this backup automatic or do you need to do this manually?

Depends on what you call a backup. You can always manually drag and drop the items....but if it is to an USB, then the copy manager is much easier.
I havnt actually tried out the WD software that comes with the NAS but that might actually have a dedicated backup feature.

When I log on as the admin I see only 2 folders on the NAS: Downloads and Public ( when I choose Copy Manager at the login screen). Of course I can see more via ssh. How are you seeing more?

I don't quite understand the external hard drive approach. Did you connect it to NAS#1 and somehow did a disk copy to it and then connected it to NAS#2?

I do not know why you only see Downloads and Public, You should see folders from ALL your shares and users assuming you are logged in with in account that has admin privileges. I am new with NASs and am still trying to figure out how to use them but even I can get access to all my folders in the copy manager, I did not do anything special or chose any special options for it. Most of my things are default.

And yes, that is exactly what I did. I put everything I needed to transfer into one folder in NAS1 and used the copy manager to copy that folder to my USB and then used the copy manger on to copy the files from the USB to NAS2. Hope this helps

What about performance boost (cache) that reviewer is talking about (up to 256M files)? Did you see faster speed when you are writing small files?

Thanks
