What should I buy?

New Around Here
Hi,

I have a small LAN at home connected to the Internet via ADSL with a fixed ip-address. Now I would like to be able to connect to my LAN over the Internet. Someone suggested I should buy a vpn-router and then connect to my home via the built in vpn-client that is in Windows 7. If this is correct, what router should I buy for this purpose in order to get a very stable and secure vpn-connection? It will only be one or two vpn connections at the time!
Thanks!

What do you want to do remotely?

get/put files?
view your own web servers' pages?
use remote desktop?

A VPN is nice, but might be an overkill for some of this.

Thanks stevech!

I will use the connection to get and put files on our NAS which is on our LAN at home as well as backing up files from the remote computer to our NAS. (I have tried to use ftp and SSH with a backup/syncronization software and forwarded the ports in our present router, but the connection for this was not stable and timestamps etc were lost, connection lost, etc, etc...).

I will also be able to use our colour printer at home from the remote PC.

So my aim is to get a stable and secure connection into our LAN from this remote PC and occassionally from my laptop as well when on the road. So the overall arching objective is to get a very reliable and stable connection over the internet to our LAN, and if the best option for this is in fact a vpn capable router on our end, so be it, even if it is "overkill"...
