is it true that as long as the cable modem is docsis 3.0, that the 1gb speed will pass on to the ac88u even with a low end cable modem? if not what should i purchase for a cable modem to take advantage of the benefits of the ac88u?

my isp is grande with fiber optic.

1. You need to check what modems your ISP supports as they will remotely download the correct configuration file for your modem when it goes online.

2. If your ISP supports and offers Docsis 3.1 you probably want a modem that is Docsis 3.1 capable just to future proof your setup.

3. Finally the more channels your modem uses the less likely is that your speed will suffer during peak periods that result in congestion.

4. For gig service many people on this site would recommend a modem that supports 32 downstream channels and 4 upstream channels.

If your talking about Comcast you can only get Gig speed tiers if you use a Docsis 3.1 modem they wont provision gig speeds with out one. Can't speak for other cable ISP's. Even on D-3.0 nothing less then 24 x4 and even that wont do 1000 mbps in real world.

thank's folks for your comments!

i just ordered
Next-Generation ARRIS SURFboard SB8200 DOCSIS 3.1 Cable Modem

let's see how that works. i also called t/s at grande and had a good and useful discussion. turns out we currently have their 300m package. t/s suggested docsis 3.1 for our future enhancements. same as your recommendation.
