Which "wired" router has the best VPN throughput?

For some reason, better performance is measured by the wireless performance. If I look at the power consumption of the RT-AC3200, it is shocking.

I am looking for a "wired" router which needs to be compact and running a VPN client. I will be turning of the radios so I don't care of the wireless performance.

One requirement is that they should be running Merlin, so I am currently looking at the RT-AC56U, the RT-N66U, and the RT-AC66U (and maybe the RT-AC68U, but I don't like the stand).

Which of the routers whould provide me with the best VPN throughput?

You've just got to Google a bit. I did a ton of it for a couple weeks when looking for comparisons. It's out there. Here's a quick search I did for "rt-ac87u comparison" which gave me this http://www.7tutorials.com/reviewing-asus-rt-ac87u-wifi-router-batman-would-use which I think is something along the lines of what you're looking for because it includes wired speed comparisons. There are a ton more too...keep looking and changing up your searches and you'll find them. I know I found a lot, I just don't remember where they all were.

VPN requires processing (CPU) power and most consumer routers are lacking in this department.

The RT-N66U and RT-AC66U both have a 600Mhz MIPS CPU. :(
This CPU can be overclocked to 662Mhz.

The RT-AC56U has an 800Mhz dual-core ARM CPU. :)
This CPU can be overclocked to 1Ghz+.

If you want maximum throughput, you need a desktop CPU. Setup something like pfSense on an old desktop PC.

What speeds are you hoping to achieve?

The AC56 and AC68 will give you close to triple the VPN throughput of the N66 and AC66.
